Carpets?

I have carpet, we bought our house in 2006 and had all new carpet and pad put in when we moved in. We have 3 dogs and I vacumme at least every other day. I have the bissell home health and I like it alot. I also have the bissell 2x pro heat carpet cleaner. I clean the carpets at least every 2-3 months. I recently called the carpet place to have them come out and change the pad under half our carpet. While on vacation a friend couldnt make it over to let the dogs out and they had to pee so they peed on the floor, cant blame the poor babies. I was worried about mold in the pad. He pulled it back and showed me not to worry. That mold wouldnt be growing in the pad, showed me the pad and the bottom of the carpet, you can see where they peed. The carpet fibers are clean of it, it just sank into the pad, thats why if you smell it after you clean the carpet its the pad you are smelling. So on wed they are comming out to take up the pad in that area and lay down new pad. Everyopnce in a while I can smell it but not normally and I would rather know that its clean under the carpet, but he told me as log as if you steam clean your carpet and it doesnt stay soaking wet for 24 hours or more then there is no worry of mold.

We do that too. All of our shoes are left by the front door. When some workman comes in with boots on, we scrub afterwards. We find that so digusting.

My understanding is that it does kill dust mites. So that is better, at least for a time. But my impression is that it makes mold and mildew problems worse.

I live in an apartment with all hardwood floors. After about three years, I got some area rugs to put in my living room/bedroom (it's a studio apartment). I was just so sick and tired of walking on hardwood floors. Especially when getting up in the morning; carpet just feels so much nicer on my feet.

I try to clean them regularly, but I don't always get around to it.

Anyway, I just saw so many posts about people taking carpet out and I thought "ugh." As a child, I remember playing on the carpet a lot/ laying on it to watch TV, etc (I'm an animal lover, and since the dogs weren't allowed on the furniture, I went down to them on the carpet).

I know carpet may not be the smartest option health-wise, but I've found I cannot live without it.
