I am a 27 year old with cf and I was recently hospitalized here in Oregon at the Oregon Health Science University for a cf exasperation. The Cf care team noted that I didnt sleep at all day or night for the whole two weeks I was in there. They are concerned that I might have sleep apnea. But when I went to see a sleep specialist and explained that I wake up choking for air, and have breathing problems at night, he gave me a sleep log for a month. I filled it out and went back.
I explained that constantly getting up every fifteen minutes because I couldnt fall asleep wasnt helping me. He said that I just needed to change my sleeping habits and if I dont fall asleep in fifteen minutes while laying in bed that I should get up and go do something else until I get sleepy again. Problem is that I end up being up for days on end.
If I lay in bed in the dark for about two hours or so I eventually just pass out from exhaustion or from suffering from too much pain in my system. The sleep specialist simply said that I had insomnia and didnt do any sleep study or anything. I still have my tonsils and I am afraid that I might have sleep apnea. Im sticking with what my cf care team told me. They are very concerned with this matter. I am getting frustrated by not being able to sleep at night. And when I do get some sleep, I wake up feeling more exhausted than I felt when I finally fell asleep. Can anyone please help me?? I welcome any suggestions and advice!!!
Thanks!
