CF Clinic visits

Hey all....

I am just a tad confused about all the different hospitals u atend. I am currently attendng a children's hospital in Australia but since i am 18, i am in the process of being transferred to an adult clinic at a different hospital. (shame cuz i LOVE the childrens hospital and adult hospitals are far too morbid and depressing and bland etc etc) maybe its differnt over there, but it seems as though many of you are still attending children's hospitals despite being over 18 (in your twenties actually).... so how does the system there work (wherever u guys may be)? When will u attend an adult hospital?

On rare occasions, if a patient is too sick or too involved with the childrens hospital (for example, if ur on a transplant list or in final stages or cf or something) they just turn a blind eye to your age because its best being treated at the childrens hospital (no point going through all that change and new docs and stuff), but otherwise... when u turn 18, they begin the process to get u outta here.

hey, to the last poster i was kicked out of the kids hospital when i was 17. what state in australia you from? obviously where you are they're not as willing to get rid of you as where i am!!

thanks so much for responding to my inquiry about Boston, it really put me at ease about seeing a new clinic. My clinic back home in Philly is great, but I never knew about all the infection control. I never really thought about it. Anyway, thanks again and stay well.

ive heard some people in perth staying at the childrens hospital till they are 20. but they are a bit picky if you visit emergency, they start asking 'why are you here' questions. i left when i was 16/17.

A lot of places don't have adult clinics in different hospitals, because they don't have an high enough demand for an adult clinic. The adult clinic in Toronto didn't open until 1992 and I was transferred when I was 18. The childrens Hospital was nice. But I always felt silly walking in there cause I would be in the waiting room with a bunch of kids and stuff. It depends on the city really.

I go to Yale in New Haven, Connecticut. They are currently adding an adult CF ward, but this is the first time for that. For my first 20 years, I have gone to the children's ward. For the past two and a half years I always got trouble going into the ER. The adult ER would tell me to go to children's, since that's where I usually go, and the children's ER would tell me to go to the adult's because I was over 18. One time, I remember, they had me go back and forth between the two ERs 5 times (yes, five times!) before I finally said "LISTEN THIS IS AN ER, AND I AM GOING TO STOP THIS BACK AND FORTH CRAP AND YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF ME!!" Heh. But anyway, I still have yet to be transferred to the adult ward, but it should be happening in the next year or so.

I am seen at a Children's hospital but the CF clinic has a specific day that it sees the Adult patients and they bring in special adult docs for that day. The reason we use the Children's hospital is because we have great techs and social workers and coordinators, so that way we don't have to get new people doing that just for the adults. It works out really well. Being at a Children's hospital makes them a little more sensitive to those of us who have kids and families to what we go through (not just having ourselves to worry about). When I was seen in a totally adult clinic, they just hassled me about my family and how I needed to do this or that, rather than trying to understand and work within my real life. That change has been nice. They are also more open to patients having families than my last clinic.

I agree with a piece of that last post. I actually would prefer staying in the children's hospital because I always find the nurses / docs / whoever to be more understanding, and caring. But oh well. Haha.

It didn't matter to me if I went to the children's or not. I knew most of the people in the clinic, but I've only been in the hospital twice, once when I was diagnosed (15months) and once when I was 16. So the change was no big deal. If I go in the hospital there, I wouldn't know any of the nurses more than if I went to the childrens hospital
