Good evening everyone,
While I was giving my son his albuterol before we started his nebs this evening he complained of his chest hurting when he breathed it in. I asked him what was going on and he said that his chest has been hurting lately when he breathes in deeply,,like a stabbing feeling. I asked him where and he was able to pinpoint the spot (lower left part of his chest) and when I asked him if it was always the same spot he said yes. But, he also said that it doesn't hurt every time he breathes. I'm just going to keep an eye on him...he's growing staph and aspergillus right now and for the past four months we've been on some different oral meds due to increased cough and yellow mucous production...it just seems like this disease is starting to "turn a corner" on us. We go back to clinic on the 22nd and I'll talk to the doctor then, unless his pain becomes more severe. But, the first thing that came to mind was a mucous plug. Can anyone tell me how theirs starts out and if this is something you would think of first, too? Anything I should look for or do differently? Or, am I making a deal about nothing?
Thanks,

The fact that it doesnt hurt ALL the time is kind of good. Chances are its not pleuresy then which IMHO is difficult to control the pain.

It sounds like a plug. If you can try to rub between the ribs in the area in question. Maybe some warm compresses also. Does he do the vest? If so do you know how to do manual CPT with your hands?

If you do maybe you could do a bit in that area to dislodge anything that might be stuck. If its bad enough tylenol could be given. Ideally ibruprofren would be ideal. That would help with pain, inflammation etc no matter what it is.

If you have tried everything & it continues to hurt then I would contact the doctors before the appointment.

You never know for sure what to expect with CF so you are better off erring to the side of caution.

I hope its an easy fix where you can just move a plug.

I personally don't know what to tell you. I get sharp chest pains at random. Sometimes they last for a day or two. Other times I'll get a single one that doesn't get repeated. I've never been able to pinpoint what it is, other than annoying CF crap.

My best guess... If it's persistent enough to be a real problem for him, I'd say ask a doctor. *shrug* Sorry I can't be of more help.
