Hi I haven't posted in a while cos i've been on holiday it was great, and no haemoptysis yay!!!

I went to clinic yesterday and my blows were down probably due to the holiday cos i don't do nebs when i'm away (i haven't a portable nebuliser plus its a lot of hassle when flying)
I only do my Tobi once a day and take it continuously as i don't have time to do it in a morning. My doctor said my blows have been sliding for a while and its proven to be more effective if you do it twice a day and a month on month off. I can't see why it would make a difference since i take it all the time and doing that way you don't take it at all for a month. Just wondered if anyone can shed some light on this ??

I also mentioned how after taking my Zithromax i get really sharp stomach pains for an hour or two after. He said to try 250mg rather than 500mg. Does anyone else get this? The other night i took them had my tea and drove somewhere i nearly had to stop the car cos the pains were so bad .

Hey Julie. I just wanted to say that I am pretty sure that the reason the doctor wants you to take a month off of the Tobi is so that you will not grow resistance to it as fast. Psuedamonas is a pretty nasty bug and it can grow resistance quickly. Right now I have a strain that is pretty much resistant to everything. By taking the month off it should help with that. You want the antibiotics working for you as long as possible.

As for the zithromax, I too get bad stomach cramps after taking it. My doctor lowered me to the 250mg but I still had problems and stopped taking it. I read on another topic that if you take it right before you go to bed you sleep through the cramps and nauseousness. I may start back on it and try that.

Hope this helped.

When you only take your Tobi once a day, you aren't keeping a steady level of it in your lungs to kill the "bugs", and they grow in the "lull" between meds. Also, you raise your chances of creating resistant bacteria, which would make taking Tobi a moot point, and actually could do more harm than good. Basically, you are just "feeding" the bacteria enough Tobi to get them used to it, if that makes more sense.

When you do Tobi every other month (which I don't- long story), you knock them down for a while, give your lungs a break from Tobi for a bit, and then knock the bacteria back down again for a while.

I can't take any oral antibiotics (that I've found so far) without food. I take my Zithro with meals too- maybe that would help.

And of course, you know I'm gonna say- you've got to do your meds when you go on vacation. It sucks, but especially when you say your #'s are dropping, it's really important. Can you get one that you can travel with? What kind of neb do you have now?

Imagine the bugs in your lungs are a raging fire. It starts out slow but then builds up. The TOBI is air, like blowing on embers to start a campfire. If you take it once a day, you let the fire grow, instead of putting it out. If you take it twice a day, you blow it out like you would a birthday candle.

That's why you should be taking it 2x a day when you do take it. Taking it every month, or every other month depends on your personal situation and tolerances.

Sorry your stomach hurts with the Zithro, try taking it with food like AnD suggested.
