I'm 30 have moderate CF at this point but have no clubbing. Who knows why. My niece who is 8, has some clubbing.

I think clubbed fingers are pretty, makes for beautiful nails! Look at the positve <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

BTW, I do have ugly middle fingers that bend in the direction of my pinkies. Ick. I get that from my grandma.

It may have something to do with oxygen not getting to the extremities, but I could well be wrong.
One or two of my fingers looked clubbed ever so slightly...if you look side on to the nails I see a pronounced curve in them. But then again I dont strictly have CF.

yes, the clubbing is caused by not enough oxygen getting to the extremities, i have it in my fingers and some in my toes, makes for one heck of a time trimming my pinky toe nail lol, the strange ridges might be evidence that your health is fluctuating, the thicker times you're doing better, the thinner times you're not doing as well, but thats just a guess, or do the ridges go the other way?
Anyway the clubbing isn't all that bad, privides you with some pretty darn strong fingernails because of their shape. i know that it can get worse and you can develop it over time, also i think you can reverse it a little bit with really good lung function but because cf is degenerative i don't think that applies to us (clubbin happens in other disorders as well) look it up in a medical dictionary

Yes, I have read it can be caused due to a lack of O2 as well.... but then I read of a lot of people who have very good O2 saturation and or FEV1 at around 100 and they still had clubbing, so who knows????

There are some pictures out there on the google picture search for those who are interested. When I looked at them it reminded me of my step dads finger and toe nails -- I always wondered if it also just happens to some people without any known disease or if it was because he had been a long term smoker (he has since quit)
