Composer F. Chopin

Hi all!

As a music major, I was interested to come across this article about one of the great romantic era composers Frederic Chopin.

A 1987 article and an update in 2003 suggest that he may have died from cystic fibrosis rather than the default lung disease of the era, tuberculosis.

This idea comes from his lack of children though he was married to George Sand (a woman), frequent weight loss during sickness, a sister who died at age 14, and an autopsy report which concludes that the coroner had never encountered his specific disease before.

You can download the PDF of the med journal report here

Thought I'd share with everyone. It's pretty interesting to think that one of the greatest minds in history might have had cf.

Very interesting topic...but I'm more interested in that you're a music major. I was for two years and then changed my major. I played tuba and got around to learning just about every instrument before changing. What is your primary instrument and what school do you go to? How's your cf with playing an instrument?

Hey there!! I did a little research about this a few months ago after my friend from Poland mentioned he died from CF..I didn't believe her at first but then came accross tons of info that has people believing it was CF instead of TB..very interesting and exact signs and symptoms for his starting at an early age..as well as his sister.

What school are you studying at and what is your focus??

My dad and brother and his wife were all music majors so I am always excited to see young people taking on such a cool major.

Rock CF,
Em

Interesting to hear this again.

It's been around a while, so I'm surprised there hasn't been more research into it.

Also an interesting read http://www.chestjournal.org/cgi/reprint/113/1/210.pdf
