Considering Disability

Hi there, I was just approved for disability in June. It took 2 years with an appeal to be approved.

My first piece of advice would be to get a reputable lawyer. I never would have had the stamina to do everything that needed to be done on my own. It really is a catch 22...

I had to stop working in Jan. due to my health. From there I applied for an emergency court date as mine was in May.They did expedite the process due to this. However, the interim is not a happy place to be... I am a single mom and it was very difficult as you may imagine not to have any income.I immediately filed for SSA and applied to the food stamp program. This also was a hard thing to do...but you know what? That is why it is there. They can also help with electric and cable and some weekly income. Some recommendations,Docment everything!Don't miss any appointments, keep up with the paperwork, plead your case and be patient. Don't quit if they deny you initially. You absolutely can not be working fulltime. You will need all financial documentation, i.e. bank account balances, payroll stubs, rent/mortgage etc.Also...when you do finally have your day in front of the judge be aware that they are aware of EVERYTHING...I'm just saying...

But,
It is so worth it. I can't tell you. To be able to focus on being healthy...finally. That in itself is a full time job.

Best of luck to all who are trying and may you prevail!!!Don't give up, you deserve it.

A couple of things that you probably already know of, but may be worth my mentioning...

1) You've recently worked full time or close to it, right?

2) You do know that even if you get approved for SSDI, you won't get Medicare for 2 years from the month of application?

3) After approved, and I believe after (or when) you're finally eligible for Medicare, you will need to also sign up for a Part D plan to cover meds.

If I'm incorrect on any of the above, someone let me know<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Landy,
How come it takes so long to get medicare? So initially upon your approval you get like the monthly check. But no health coverage for 2 years?

Lamp, There is no medicare coverage for 24 months after you get approved. However, depending on how much your benefit check is, you might qualify for state funded insurance coverage. What state do you live in, I could do some research for you.
