Coughing at night...

In the last week, I have not been able to fall asleep due to coughing, about four out of the seven nights. It is extremely frustrating, as I have started a second job, working nights and weekends (not every day though). After work at night, I simply want to go to sleep, but I can't. I have ZERO other symptoms and do NOT cough that much during the day. I have had no fever, no aches, no stuffy nose...and my PFT's three weeks ago were the highest they have been since January.

Does anyone have tips on what could be causing this? Do you have any suggestions on how to stop it? Currently I do one set of breathing treatments a day (in the morning)....do you think maybe I should up it and do one at night too? I am out of ideas. It was pretty bad last night and I ended up taking cough meds b/c there was no other way I would have slept. I know that is bad, but...

I am thinking of calling my doctor tomorrow (since I doubt he is there today) to see what to do. If I have some suggestions to give him that would be great, because I doubt he will jump right to IV's especially with no other symptoms and I really don't want oral abx...

FYI--I finish my month on of AZLI on Friday and usually the coughing is better while on AZLI...

*****UPDATE: It is definitely not simply reflux. Unfortunately, I have not stopped coughing all day, had low grade fever for a little bit and can barely talk. It is now 7:15 and I have yet to talk to the doctor! The nurse called me back at 11:30ish and said she would talk to the dr as soon as he came in, which I am assuming was probably 1 PM (she said probably not reflux, based on the constant coughing, and she did say something about my culture, so maybe that will give me an answer)...so I called back at four when I still had not heard and am still waiting. Very frustrated right now, this cough is miserable!!!!

Caitlin.....this totally sounds like a reflux problem to me. Have you ever had any problems with that? Often times when we are laying in bed "stuff" from our earlier meal comes back up and irritates the throat and can sometimes get to the lungs. Do you take nexium or other? It is NOT always the obvious heartburn symptoms that we think of. It can be a very silent problem.

Try propping your head up at night. You can do this with a wedge pillow or put something under your mattress. Using extra pillows doesn't always work because you slip down. Try not eating after about 7pm. Try to notice any heartburn symptoms during the day.

Just some thoughts for you.

Reflux is a good hypothesis.

Also you could be allergic to something in your bed room (the pounds of dust mite fecal matter in your mattress, pillows, or comforter). You can develop allergies at ANY time.

Hope you figure it out. Take care <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I would definitely try to do a breathing treatment at night as well! This is going to sound pretty simple, but when I've had issues falling asleep due to coughing sometimes hot tea with honey will help!
