Help. My 5 year old used to take Ultrase MT12 (4 capsules with meals) As a result of FDA problems, he has been switched to Creon DR 24,000 (2 capsules with meals and snacks). He's only been on them one day. This evening, about an hour after he had his inhalers (Xopenex and QVar) as well as his Prevacid Solutab, I mix his Creon with ketchup (acidic) before he had a glass of Ovaltine. He complained that the "ketchup" was burning his mouth. ??? I've mixed his Ultrase with ketchup before without any problem. It's portable (love those little packets you can buy at Sam's Club) and acidic, so I thought it was a great solution for a kid who wouldn't eat applesauce if you promised him the world. What's happening? His reaction was immediate - before I got the second spoonful in him, and I had just mixed it - it hadn't sat for more than 3 or 4 seconds. What do you use to mix your Creon? What do you give the school to mix with Creon? They don't have a fridge in the classroom and I need something they can use!

Actually I'd call the doctor today. I wonder if he's having an allergic reaction. i do think if you let it sit in the mouth it can burn, but right away!??

Anyway, if you have trouble getting him to take it with applesauce, have you tried teaching him how to swallow the pill whole? I did with my daughter at age 3 and she's a pro now, 4 pills at once, no problem.

We taught her by using a large straw (McDonalds has wide ones that fit the creon perfectly). Put the pill (1) in the straw and then dip in a drink. Put your finger over the top of the straw to hold the drink and pill in there. Put the bottom end of the straw in your kiddos mouth and then remove your finger as you tell them to suck. Drink and pill should slide right down. After 2 weeks of this, my daughter could take a pill and do it on her own. It just teaches the process.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's a pretty clever way to teach swallowing pills! But I'm wondering if you are using Creon DR 24000 - those pills look awfully big to me. But I'm considerably older than a child and I still have trouble swallowing pills . . . .! I do know I need to work on getting him to swallow pills whole. I suppose this is a good time to start. . .

By the way - I did call the doc's office. They usually take a whole day to call back. I also called the manufacturer - I spoke to one of their pharmacists who didn't have any idea what the problem might be. She suggested I check his mouth for any irritation and said they only recommend applesauce, so I should call the doc! I gave him Creon this morning of course with his breakfast - but I cheated and gave it to him in a bunch of yogurt. No problem with that.

No her pills are the smaller ones 6,000 I think. Sorry, I don't know if the larger ones will work. Good luck.

I am not sure if this helps but my Creon information that comes with the pills said that holding the capsule contents in your mouth could irriate the inside of the mouth or cause cold sores.
Good Luck

My daughter takes them with applesauce. She just got switched from Pancrecarb. We have not had this issue w/ applesauce. I got lucky and she has always used applesauce with no problems. Have you ever tried the flavored applesauces? They have many dif ones <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">) Hope it gets straightened out though! Good luck!
