Julie, how much did everything cost for you to have your child?

Isn't the harvesting, freezing and cleaning of the sperm cost the most?

Oh thanks for explaining that. That must have been a very frustating time for you. All that time and not really knowing what was causing your problem. Now it is nice that you have the web site to tell others so they don't go through the same thing.

My fertility medications were about $1,200 (some people run anywhere from $500-3200 for meds) and I was lucky that my insurance covered some of the medications like Lupron injections, birth control pills, progesterone for pregnancy support and some other items I can't think of right now.

The fee to the clinic that I wen't to isn't a "generalized fee". What I mean is that they itemize everything, but they DO, do their absolute best to give an estimate.

The fee to the embryologist was $1000. The fee for anesthesia for myself and for Mark was $500 each. The fee to the doctor for the egg retrieval was $1500. The fee to the doctor for the transfer of embryos was $1200. The fee for the non-surgical aspiration was $700. I had 8 ultrasounds at $150 each, 7 doctors visits at $75 each, 2 doctors visits at $150 each, an initial visit for myself at $250 and an initial visit for Mark at $150, I had 12 blood draws at 10 each, 8 estrogen levels at $50 each, 5 progesteron levels at $100 each, 3 FSH levels at $50 each, A hystoplansyogram at $400, a systo0gram at $350 and some other charges I can't recall now. That right there totals $9745, plus the fertility meds=$10,945.

All in all we spent around $12,500 (including the fertility meds)

Oh, initial freezing would have been $500, 1 year of cryo storage would have been $400 and there is some mandatory testing. We didn't have any embryos left over though.

That is a lot of money, but you spent it on the most important thing you can ever spend money on. Is that nonsurgical sperm retrieval more expensive and more successful?

The non surgical retrieval is LESS expensive, $500 for anesthesia and $700 for the retrieval. Vice a mesa procedure which can run anywhere from $1,000-$3500 (sometimes including anesthesia sometimes not). My Reproductive endocronologist has the same success rates with either, although HE does the NSA (non surgical apsiration) BUT if a patient wants a MESA procedure you have to go to a urologist who specializes in male infertility-that can be quite difficult in itself as they are hard to find in some states.

One could probably go withouth the anesthesia for the NSA, they just poke an needle in the testicles so a local anesthetic like lidocaine would work fine. My husband had an open biopsy on lidocane and it was painful for him. But he thought for sure he could handle the NSA without any anestesia, but our RE wouldn't do the procedure unless he had conscious sedation, so it really wasn't a choice if we wanted to do the NSA.

Yeah I think I definitely would need anasthesia when they poke a hole in my testicles (OUCH!!!!!!)

But I would go through any pain to have my child.
