DEXA scan

Hey, everyone.

Just curious how many of us have normal or abnormal DEXA scans? Just for my own curiousity. I just got the results back from mine and it was normal, but they still want me to do it every year (fine with me). Just wondering what others' experiences with this have been and how many of us actually have the bone loss associated with CF that has shown on a DEXA.

Thanks,

I just had my first DEXA scan a couple of months ago, and it was normal. Yay! I was worried before hand, because my vitamin D level has been on the low side of normal for the past year or so.

My last one showed osteopenia. I have been lax on getting another more recent for them to compare <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

CFF recommends all CFers over the age of 18 get a DEXA scan every year.

Why? Because we don't absorb vitamin D that well, we thus don't absorb calcium as well as "normal" (vitamin D is necessarily for calcium absorption). Secondarily, we're often on steroids of all sorts, which can deplete bone density as well.

So many CFer's are osteopaenic or osteoperodic.

It's incredibly important to treat this - fracturing a rib due to coughing or a vertebrae or even a hip can have very poor health consequences.

I myself have been osteopaenic at both my hip and vert for the past 5 years, but this past year, due to more weight lifting and more calcium intake my hip went to normal. Vert is just on the border for osteopaenic.
