I don't blame you for being pissed. I'd be pissed too if something like that was known and I was just not made aware of it. They figure you're just the patient, why do you kneed to know? Hah. Maybe because they're your lungs? Anyways. I haven't had that happen to me, at least not yet. But you have every right to be angry.

Yep- as a parent of a cf'er this has happened to me. My then 4 yr old had a lower left lobe collapsed and we didn't find out until about the end of the hospital stay.

Then a year later he was in the hospital in November and the doctor tells us, "well we need to be really agressive on his IV treatment, you recall he had cultured cepecia last march when he was in the hospital. I about hit the floor, this was the first time my husband and I had heard that!!

This must happen quite often.

I've never not been told about a collapse - at least I don't think I have. But I have had my right upper lobe collapse three times. Each time it was so minimal that they sent me home in hopes that it would reinflate, with antibiotics and time, but it never did and each t ime I ended up back in the hospital with a chest tube. Finally in 2004 even with a chest tube it wouldn't reinflate so after a week and a half with the stupid tube they went in and removed a portion of the upper lobe, bulletcomy I think is what they called it. It was explained to me that the lung in that area was like a building that had a shell but not structore holding it up and it would just continue to cause more problems.

But with a collapsed lung I would also think they would be concerned of the junk that it is sitting up in there not being able to move because of the collapse.

Maybe they didn't feel to tell you because it was small enough that they felt it would disapper on it's own and why have you worry about it until you are aware of it. I am not sure. I am sorry you found out like you did. I would question my doctor - he is your advocate and should answer to you.

This is how I found out I was culturing PA. I happened to see my lab. No one ever called and told me after the labs came back - and I don't know if they were going to or if someone had just assumed I'd laways cultured it. It was very upsetting, both in finding out i was growing it, and not having anyone take the time to look through my file and realize I never had it before and might like to know about it. I now get all my lab results sent to myself as well as the doc.
