I have to travel an hour to go to my local Dr. He is a peds Dr, but he is very good. He takes care of all the CF patients in SW Kansas. I have been with him since I was Dx 12 years ago. I go to him for my cough or any other little problem, but when I really get sick I travel to The Childrens hospital in Denver Colo, wich is 5 hour drive. My local doctor gives me the choice of staying here when I get sick, wich I will do if I just have lower PFT's and a cough, or he will right an order for me to be admitted up at Denver if it is worse. I prefer Denver but it does make a financial strain to travel that far and be that far away from family. When I go in localy it is easier but the hospital is not up to par on infection control and staff. If I do go in down here the Dr wil call up to Denver dially for advice.

Hey Karen,

My previous clinic was about 35min away.. My current clinic is about 1 1/2 away (same clinic as Melissa's)

I felt that a) i needed an adult clinic & b) i needed a change..

I have discussed w/ my primary care physician what would i do if an emergency - i would go to one of the local hospitals here where he has privileges ..

I also know the pulmo dr. there & feel comfortable w/ him.. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Then of course i would transfer to St. Vincent's in Manhattan if need be..

PCP & i felt better that we have a plan in place.. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I technically have two centers, my real one that has followed me for my whole life and my college one. I originally just had the one here (at school) so that if something happened I would have someone to go to. I did a summer appointment there to show my face and get some baseline numbers. My health has taken a nosedive in the past year and a half so it worked out really well to have the second center so I can be admitted, have follow-up appointments, and be seen monthly instead of every three months. I actually see them more than my real doc who is like a 7 hour drive away so I only see him for my 3-month appointments. However, my real doc is the one I call/email when I'm feeling icky and, based on my symptoms, he'll either call in antibiotics or tell me to get myself into the clinic here to be looked at. Having both a center that I like and a closer one that I'm ok with has worked out well so far. Just a note-the center I went to during undergrad used to try to prescribe me a bunch of extra meds based on what they thought was normal instead of looking at what I was already taking. You just have to know what works for you and be willing to speak up for yourself and articulate what you need.

My CF clinic is about 45 mins away and I still go there even though I had the transplants. My Tx docs want me to see the CF docs every 6 months so that someone is keeping an eye on me when they can't because they are 6 hours away. They also want him to be the one who gives me and Rx for my enzymes and keeps track of the digestive end of the CF. I think that I have always been about 45 mins from my CF center and I have always gone to the same one.
