Doctors While Pregnant

Kristen,

Before the miscarriage I was told from my CF team that I'd only see them every 3 months. I did see a High Risk OB, and they said that I would have been seeing them every month. The CF team said they would be in collaboration with the High risk OB team as needed.

My CF team said they'd see me in 3 months at the beginning, too. Then, as I had issues they ended up seeing me about every six weeks. I started with the standard OB appointments, although my CF doc recommended that I see a perinatologist, too. Once I began having problems, I saw my perinatologist in between the regular visits to the OB and while I was in the hospital for lung issues.

I saw my CF doc every 3 months, as usual. Then I saw a high-risk OB for their normal appointment times as well. I ended up going more frequently to them though because the umbilical cord was wrapped around baby's neck 2 times and they wanted him monitored weekly and bi-weekly for awhile (by U/S and NST). But once it unwrapped, I was back on the regular OB schedule. I think my high-risk OB was quite a bit over-cautious with me and I think they worried a little too much about things. I did fine lung-wise the entire pregnancy and yet they acted like they wanted the baby out sooner rather than later so that I didn't end up with lung complications. Strange if you ask me!!! I think most of the CF women had not done as well and they were a little nervous. I know of some people on here who went to a regular OB as well, but I think most CF clinics recommend a high-risk OB due to the types of complications we might have during pregnancy and childbirth.

Both pregnancies I saw the CF clinic every 3 months and saw my normal OB on the normal pregnancy schedule. I was also followed by a high risk OB every 6 weeks for an ultrasound to monitor baby's growth. I mostly saw the perinatologist as a favor to my OB since he was the one who wanted me to (not the CF team). Both pregnancies were fine though I did use IVs once while I was pregnant with my son. The CF team always told me just to let them know if I needed them to talk to my OB otherwise they just kind of left the pregnancy thing alone. My first pregnancy my OB was there for the delivery - I did NOT want the perinatologist to deliver me because they tend to be very over cautious (think about it - all they see are bad things all day long - they used to LOVE me in the office because there was nothing wrong with my pregnancy). As for my second pregnancy - well she was attended by a midwife at home <img src="">

I think you're fine seeing a regular OB. If the need arises, they can send you for a consult w/ a peri or they can consult one themselves.

leah - I agree there are potential complications w/ the pregnancy as far as possibly getting sick and needing IVs but I don't agree about complications w/ childbirth. The research I've read points to women w/ CF having "normal" childbirths (as far as childbirth in this country can be considered normal anyway).
