SSDI which is based on income requires that you earn a certain # of "credits". As to whether that takes 5 years or not I am not sure truthfully.......

I guess potentially you could work part time for more years & be eligible versus working full time for less years, but I dont know that for sure. Its something I would have to look up in my paperwork.

ok, i have done so much research on ssi and ssdi it makes me sick....so social security income (ssi) is based on how much money you currently have in savings and how much your spouse, or if you are still dependent on you parents, your parents income. Social Security Disablity insurance (ssdi) is not based on what your spouse or parents earn, or how much you have in savings. ssdi is based on your inability to work because of illness or injury. with ssdi you must have had a job in the past and earned enough credits. the only thing i am not 100% on is you have to work at least 5 or 7 years...i think its a minimum of 5. I WILL BE STARTING MY SSDI THIS JUNE AND WILL BE GETTING MORE MONEY A MONTH THAN WHAT I WAS MAKING FULL TIME AT MY OLD JOB. BUT I HAVE 11 CREDITS WORTH SO THAT HELPS. BUT BOTTOM LINE IS WITH PROPER DOCUMENTATION FROM YOU DOCTOR, YOU CANT GET DENIED SSDI, IF YOU HAVE PROPER NUMBER OF CREDITS. THE WHOLE APPROVAL PROCESS FOR MY SSDI WAS 15 DAYS...AND MY HEALTH IS NOT HORRIBLE, SINCE I FISH EVERYDAY...ITS ALL ABOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION. ANY ONE NEEDS ADVICE OR HELP WITH THE PROCESS FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME.

I am on SSD. I was married before to a guy in the army when I applied, his income in no way affected my outcome of getting SSD. I got it in Aug of 2004, in May of 2005 we divorced and still nothing effected my outcome of my SSD. In May of 2006 I remarried to another man in the army. My SSD still has stayed the same. With SSD it is soley on you and not you and your husband if your married. Trust me I agree the military doesnt make alot but its enough in the eyes of the goverment to not help you on SSI. I would highly suggest that you apply for SSD. I wasnt working all those years and just this past nov started working part time and as lond as I stay under $600 a month then its like im not even working they dont care, it doesnt even count toward a trial work perid. Which is awesome b/c like now when in 3 days notice I had a port surgery and am home for 3 weeks on iv's we would never make it by without my SSD.

So, to clarify, you guys are saying if you are on SSDI, you can marry someone and not lose your benefits? That has been the largest reason why my fiance of nearly 12 years is still my fiance. I am also on SSDI.
