Does anyone know of this group?

Terry,

If you would like to vent about it, please feel free to PM me. We've had comments like "Relay for Life is much more important a cause." It makes me want to say that a simple, I wish we/I could but we support other causes, would be more appropriate.

That is NOT COOL on their part. I'm so sorry.

I've done fundraising for colleges non-profit arts groups and why the author didn't pick something a little less inflamatory, we'll never know. I wonder if the CFF could request the article's removal. I'm not talking censorship, I'm just talking good taste.

As far as the Jonathan Swift comment earlier...I'm teaching him right now in my British Lit class. At least he APPROPRIATELY picked a topic that was a universal theme that was an issue AND a solution that was beyond ironic. This author...Swift she is NOT.

But that IS censorship. That's the very definition of censorship. Censorship is "supervising the manners or morality of others" (dictionary.com). Good taste to you is not good taste to person X or person Y. I don't personally think that article is funny. I'm not about to jump to my feet screaming OFFENSIVE, but I don't find it funny either. To me, it's just dumb. And it may confuse some people, but pulling it because it confuses or offends people is censorship.

I personally don't agree AT ALL with groups like the KKK. They're incredibly offensive. But they have a right to free speech, same as the rest of us. No matter what I or anyone else thinks of what they have to say.

Ok, Websters.

I was just making a point that it wasn't in good taste for those of us dealing with the fall-out of CF.

Asking someone to remove something because it is distasteful to you or to your group isn't censorship. Requiring them to do so, is. If supervising the manners or morality of others is censorship, then the majority of us are guilty of being censors on a daily basis not just for print items but for everything. As a teacher in public education with rules and the like to enforce (which is a code of manners and morality) I am a censor. I should hate my life! No wonder my students hate me, hate the administrators, hate school, etc.!!!

But my comment wasn't to start a debate about censorship. I spent 15 years of my life either on or coaching a debate team. I was just making a random statement about how it is offensive and it would be "nice" if it would disappear, especially if someone from the CFF mentioned to the Onion writer(s) that it was distasteful to the CF community. I know the Onion doesn't have to do anything it doesn't want to. I could create a website that was www.theonionisawful.com and write whatever I want as long as it is true or is satire as to avoid long legal entanglements over libel or is it slander... Between the two of us, Emily, we would have a pretty awesome site. You are a great wordsmith and would keep me honest in the censorship category!

If I'm not allowed to rant about removal of the article, then my free speech is being suppressed! Man, this free speech thing is very circle of life-like!

I have a great sense of humor and can see how the article was *supposed* to be funny, but again coming from a fund raising background, I can also see MANY OTHER organizations they could have used as the basis for the article. Then maybe THAT group would be giving the Onion free press and publicity instead of us!

I agree with you about free speech; however, I have learned that free speech doesn't come without conflict.

Thanks for the banter Emily. I enjoy word sparring with you!!!

Very good point. I'm glad you enjoy my word smithing. Hahahaha. Free speech comes with responsibility... unfortunately, some people choose to ignore that part.
