Tiffany,

I have had the E-Flow since late last year and I still have trouble keeping my aerosol head clean. I even bought an ultra sonic jewellery cleaner which has helped somewhat. I clean the head in the u/sonic cleaner once / week with demineralised water.

After each use I rinse the head under running water w some detergent then I immediately put the head (together with the nebuliser unit) in demineralised water and boil for 10 mins. I still found that my head only lasted 4 months (I use HS 7% and I know that this reduces the lifespan of the head).

If there are any other tips you can give me, please let me know. My nebuliser times have gone from 8 mins to 17 minutes now for Ventolin and 5 ml HS (and no, I don't mix).

Thanks

Your times are going up because the minerals from the tap water that you rinse the eFLow in twice a day are clogging the laser drilled holes.

Next time you get a new head, rinse the head in distilled water. This will help your neb times stay low...

Hi there,

We did have a lot of trouble with the minerals on our eflow head. Yes, the minerals in the tap water do make a great difference. I don't know if you use pulmozyme, but if you do hydrogen peroxide made a huge difference for us. We have just added HT this week so we will see what our results are. So far they are about the same, (but I am sure from what I have heard from others that the times may go down. I will keep you posted).

Here is how we currently clean our neb heads. After we do our treatments (we don't wash out between the albuterol and the pulmozyme)

1- We wash it with the faucet although there are a lot of mineral in tap water as Amy said just washing it in the steril distilled water didn't work for us. I think we needed the water pressure from the fauceet to get the junk out of the tiny holes.
2- Use soap and distilled steril water to shake it in a container for about 2 min.
3- Wash it off with the boiled water.
4- Shake it up in a contanier with Hydrogen Perxiode about 1-2 min
5- Use the ultrasonic cleaner with alcohol for about 15 min
6- Boil it/ rinse it in the distilled water
7-Set out to dry

That may sound like a lot, but as so many of you older cfer's know, you get used to what you have to do to make things work. For us it was a lot easier to do this and have 3-5 min treatments than to sit for 15-20 min doing each neb. We now have it down to a science and can do it in no time at all.

I do have to say that I am a little worried about the HTS because we now have this system that works so well for us, I am not sure what other product will break down salt left on the head. Some ideas of things that we have tried before and may try again are vinegar which actually brought back 5 heads that had quit working or were 15+ min. (I called FoundationCare and they said all of these were safe to use.)

We were going through a new neb head once a month almost for the first 10 months we had it. Now we have had the same one (one that was taking 15+ min) for about 7 months. Knock on wood that the HTS doesn't change this too much.

Hope something there helps. The eflow is awesome when it works, but is really frustrating when you see the times climbing up again.

Take care and let me know if your times get faster for you. Also if you hear of any other ideas we are always open to trying something new that works maybe even better than what we are currently doing.

Have an awesome day.

</end quote>
I'm curious how you evaluated this.

Did you have a head, rinise it with tap water. Then get another head, rinise it only with distilled water (not to be confused with sterile water) and then compare times?

Or did you have just one head, rinse it with tap water, then switch to distilled water, and not see an imporvement?

I would like to know how you evaluated that distilled water wasn't any better, out of curiosity. Thanks

Do you actually boil the neb in distilled water? you pour the distilled water out of the plastic container to boil?

I have only been using the eflow for a month (love it too BTW). I was told by foundation care to rinse the head with the faucet pressure on high for about 10 sec on each side then to use distilled water to wash off any mineral deposits that might be present. I do have a water filtration system on my house water so that helps with keeping mineral deposits low. Next I boil for 5 minutes then place in alcohol for next use.

So let me ask you smart peoples:
If I rinse the head with the faucet first and then with distilled water, will it be any less useful? If not, I think I'll try that. I feel like the pressure from the faucet would be good for it.

Foundation Care told me that the minerals from the faucet will get lodged in the head.... and will be difficult to remove (pouring distilled water over the head after that will not remove those minerals). If it were that easy to remove particles lodged in the head, neb times would never increase!!!

The pressure isn't that big of a deal. not clogging is the bigger issue.....

Bottomline, I love distilled water and no use of tap water ever.
