Hey guys,

I got thinking about this while reading the (very funny) thread about what bugs us about non-cfers. Can I say what bugs me most? I live with my parents, brother and sister (none of whom have cf, thank God). They all smoke In fairness it's never in the house, they stand at the back door. I worry a lot hearing my dad cough so badly evey morning. He's had pneumonia twice and is ofetn on antibiotics from his doc. It particularly bugs me when I come home from a run/ gym and see one of them in the back garden smoking. Especially my sister- she's a few years younger than me and we look quite alike so I always kinda saw her as "me minus the cf"...now she's throwing her healthy lungs in my face. Do I sound bitter about this? I guess I really am.

But I can't talk about it to them as they just shy away from the conversation. Literally my dad will leave the room. He is so, so addicted and I know that is a massive problem for him. I just don't get it, they are really supportive of me in all other ways. But I bust my ass day in, day out to stay on top and still won't have what they naturally have. But they don't seem to give a crap about preserving their health, or how much it hurts me.

Am I being self-righteous? It is their life, their choice. And, like my sister rather hurtfully said to me, "hey I'm not the one with cf"...what would you guys do?</end quote>

as far as you sister saying that... next time she says somehting like that tell her " your right your not the one with cf because you couldnt handle it"....i have a sister i know exactly what its like to have that thrown in my face...im sorry she said that

Cf or No Cf Smokers Should NOT Smoke around People who don't smoke.

When I was younger and doing well I could not stand to be around
people smoking.I would not date a smoker. Now the smell takes my breath
away.. The odor is awful.

I had 2 people living in my basement who smoked. They had gotten
thrown out of their own Son's house for smoking around their own
grand child who has asthma.. They smoked in my house ,After 3 warnings
I kicked their asses Out!!!

Smokers have no clue how bad it smells or how it makes
a Cfers small air ways close up.
Smokers are also killing them selfs .

Good Luck.

Everyone, thanks so much for your thoughts. It makes me feel better to know I'm not the only who gets bugged by this kind of thing.

Just to clarify something; I dearly love my family, they are fantastic. I am almost finished my PhD and since my university is literally 5 minutes from my family home it would be nuts to move out. I plan to move on shortly after I submit the PhD.

KrazyKat, you are right, I am very lucky to be able to live at home and I do appreciate it. I pay rent to my parents. I contribute to the house in other ways too. That's really beside the point though. Would you ever consider voicing your opinion in a less confrontational way? Look, on these forums you don't know people's circumstances, so tread lightly.

I am very concerned about my family's health, not just mine. My concern, especially for my dad, is part of the reason I raised this topic. I don't want them smoking because...and I don't know if you've heard this...it leads to cancer! I care enormously about others but this isn't even about me anymore. Anyone living with a challenge, like a long-term illness, gets an early insight into what it means to be alive. It reflects pretty poorly on you that you could make such a sweeping statement.

Forgive me if the instinct to look after myself seems somewhat "self-absorbed". I have yet to find a way to fight CF that doesn't consume quite a lot of my brain power.

@ KrazyKat

You hit it right on the nail, buddy. That's what I was thinking but too lazy to articulate.

@ sexxiej

KrazyKat wasn't being an ass about ANYTHING. How can you say something so ridiculous and expect people to take you seriously? If you're going to make a statement, at least have a reasonable argument to support it, not just emotional outbursts and ranting. He stated his opinion in a non arrogant and respectful way, not something that can be said about your response.
