Exercise Help

I have a pulse ox so I can measure my heart rate that way. My hr is always high so I have a different range than someone my age (27). Anyway, I actually just walk from my car to the office (on a big campus) so that's a 2 mile walk (though there is a bus that I was cheating on when it's been cold that's a quarter mile away). Suggestions for getting through the sob at the beginning of exercise? This is the hardest part, pushing through. My sats only drop right at the beginning (or during exacerbations) which my dr says is pretty normal so as long as they bounce back up quickly I'm okay to keep going he says but it makes me want to stop.

Pursed lip breathing will help with the SOB and exercising. I do it and I notice that I feel much better. And I just got out of 2 hospital stays in 2 months so my exercise tolerance is much lower than it was before.

Here is the thread from a little bit ago about it

Hope it helps!

Hey etabetac!

I just started working out again too -- my hiatus wasn't as long as yours, but I had a pretty big exacerbation, followed by recovery, followed by the holidays... no energy for excercising!!

I find it's always easier for me to get myself to work out in my home than at a gym. ESPECIALLY if I'm out of shape or congested. I'm more likely to push myself and spit up when it's not in front of a lot of people from my community!

Personally, I have bought these 10 minute solutions videos -- pilates, yoga, etc. This way, I can start with 10 minutes a day. Some days when I don't feel like I can do much, I tell myself I'll just do 10 minutes, but when I get started and loosened up, I wind up doing more! (Plus, doing something less aerobic to start is good -- and with all of our coughing, doing pilates isn't so hard!!)

I exercise at home with my mom -- it helps to have someone else there who you're not afraid to look foolish in front of. At least that's the way I feel.

Good luck... It is SO hard to start, but SO worth it!!

just to mention that I always do my xopenex before I work out, if I cant then I do 4 puffs of albuterol because I have been told (though I dont really believe it) that that would be equivalent to the effectiveness of a neb treatment.

Also my tip for being congested at gym at least where I go almost everyone has headphones on sp although I was very conscious about it at first I have relaxed a bit, but still to be a bit discreet and for those who dont have headphones I master the huff which sounds a bit like a sneeze I guess since people if anything say "God bless you" and I always have a towel with me for wiping away sweat from my face a.k.a spitting in
