Exercise...

Hi all!

I have always been very compliant with my treatments (meds, vest, neds, etc.) but I have a really hard time sticking with a regular exercise routine. Currently (i.e. the last three weeks) I am trying to exercise 3 times a week for 30 - 40 mins a pop. "Try" being the operative word there. Unfortunately, when the choice is between a nap and exercise the former always wins out. Frequently, I feel too tired to exercise or once I start exercising, about mid-way, my legs really start to hurt (even if I stretch). I feel like there is no good reason why I should be too tired to exercise - I only work PT, and my FEV1 is usually in the mid 70's. Does anyone else have a lot of problems motivating themself to exercise???

I do too, Mary.

I am the most faithful when it comes to my breathing treatments and daily medications. However, I fail miserably when it comes to exercise...

For example, I was doing so well for 1 month, but then the temperatures went back up to the 90's again. My treadmill is in the upstairs/attic (raised ranch home), and the temp with the air conditioner on is never less than 85! It's soooo hard.

I don't work at all, and my FEV1 is 64%, BTW.

There are only two things I can tell you. Try and workout as early as possible! I know for me that if I have time to 'think' about it, I 'think' myself right out of it. Second, try and look at it as 'another treatment'. We are both faithful with our treatments so that outlook may help us. I do intend to get back into it but not now while it's still 90+ in PA. Fall will be here soon enough.

I can totally relate to this as well.
I was even thinking about it just before i opened your thread.
I always want to exercise (for me, yoga it's what's proven to be miraculous); I have all the conditions to do it: i live alone, i have time (even though i work full time) and i love the effects it has on me, but still i always choose some other stupid activity over it.
But let's not associate every little bad thing that happens to us with our illness.. everyone (cf or non cf) is the same when it comes to exercising, people just get lazy about these things..

I can certainly understand how you feel. The secret in my opinion is to find someone to exercise with on a regular basis. For the last 12 years I have been walking 4-5 days a week with a friend. It makes a huge difference because instead of thinking about how hard it is or how boring or how terrible I feel, we chat as we walk.

I'm lucky that my friend likes to talk, because when I'm doing poorly and the shortness of breath is bad she just does all the talking.
