Fee for service?

Ok, as usual my non profit is struggling financially (who isn't) and I'm considering different options for how to continue to offer services, without going broke myself.

Could I get some feedback on if you think this is reasonable?

My plan would be to charge a set fee of $50 or $100 ONLY if the case is won. This fee would be due no later than 6 months afer the case has been completed. That way it gives people time to start getting their disability benefits before the payment would be due.

This "fee" would still be tax deductable as a donation.

Would you still use DAFCF services if we started charging a fee?

Thank you

Hi Julie,

Sorry to hear that DAFCF is struggling!

I would say that if the choices were to not have your service available at all, versus "charging" $50 or $100 dollars, I would definitely charge the fee.

$50 or $100 is still a drop in the bucket compared to what attorneys charge for the same service! Plus from my own experience when you helped me, that amount would barely cover the postage/supplies etc. so it's not like you are trying to gouge people! You are simply trying to help by being able to continue offering the service.

I already used DAFCF (and won<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) but if I were to lose benefits or need to reapply in the future I would use DAFCF again and happily pay the fee.

I know it's not what you want to do or envisioned, but if it's a way to keep your organization going I would say go for it.

Good luck Julie and take care!

I would hope that those that have been helped by you would make a donation after it's all said & done without being asked. If this isn't happening, you could either request a small fee or percentage of settlement, or strongly encourage a donation when settlement is received.

Is it OK to charge a fee if you're non-profit? I'm afraid I don't know the ins & outs of non-profit companies.

I hope it all works out for you!

For the most part no, people are not making donations after their cases have been won. There are two exceptions to this that I'm sincerely grateful to though.

Yes, I can charge a fee. Non profit does not mean there is no money exchange going on. It simply means that I as an individual cannot make a profit (I can still pay myself though)off of what I am doing. I could, if the money was flowing in, compensate myself for the expense. I'm not even looking to do that though, I just can't afford to use any more of my own money.

I don't want people to not use the organization because there is a fee though.
