Feeding tube question

Sophia got her g-tube 10 months ago. She has always had a very poor appetite. To get her to eat it has always required that someone ask to her to take a bite or for us to put the bite in her mouth. It has gotten worse since she got the g-tube. Yesterday I had her at the GI drs to discuss her lack of eating at school. It was decided that she needs to eat at the nurse. If she won't eat there, then she needs to get tube fed at lunch in the nurse's office. I hate to do that to her, but she hasn't gained since starting Kindergarten.

My kids have the Bard style button (which is more of a flap with a snap-type closure) The only time we've had a blockage it was in the extension tube and it was because a nurse tried to put crushes pills through it.

Unlike the Mic-key, the Bard button needs to be replaced via surgery so I'm glad we never had an issue with blockage. The only time we've replaced one is when Josh's snap broke off.

Josh has never had much appetite and gets 75% of his calories from the feeds. Some days are better than others, but it doesn't usually correspond to his feeds.

Ive never had a problem flushing the tube either, other then the occassionally being half asleep to put meds in or whatever & the clamp was locked as well.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> We change Reeces' mickey every 3~4 months so I would check into getting it changed to see if that made a difference.

The first time is a bit overwhelming, atleast it was for me, even the 2nd time. I had the nurse look over my shoulder the first & 2nd time to mak sure I was doing it right.

As far as Reeces' appeitte, he dosent really have much of one either, except for junk! He gets 3 1/2 cans over 10 hours at night. During the day he might eat one complete meal & thats usually around 3ish. But he has gained weight! When we put the mickey in in March 05' he was about 30lbs & now he's 44lbs!!!!!

oh yes, the g-tube not allowing the liquid to go through. I've had the problem many a time. You have to make sure the clamp is released!!

Seriously, not trying to be a smart-arse. I can't believe how many times I've started troubling shoot the dang system only to find I forgot to unclamp. But other than that we've never had a problem with a clogged tube. Do you keep a spare? If so and its really bad, replace the tube.

As far as eating, Emily (4) doesn't eat much. But neither does little brother. I don't think I've heard of many young children being big eaters so I can't tell how much of its due to the tube verses the age.
