Feeling guilty for not doing much!

Hello all. Just out of curiosity, do you guys excercise a lot just with the aim of improving your health? My question comes from the fact that i , basically, just get up in the morning, do my treatment sitting down at the computer, relaxed.. Then for most times i dont do anything else all day that will directly improve my overall condition. I do eat properly but i dont excercise. Sometimes i feel guilty for that..
Another thing is, i do avoid smoke environments but, if i feel like going to a bar i just go, sometimes every weekend like a lot of healthy people do.. And have the odd drink (socially).
Do you feel like you spend most of your time doing activities related to improving your health or you just try to live as normally as you can?
Thanks..

I dont exercise at all. The doctor has told me I need to even if its a walk around the block. The extent of my exercise is going up/down the stairs carrying laundry. I hate exercise (in a task related manner), but I enjoy being active with sports etc. The problem with that is nothing is on a regular basis & I am so out of shape that when I do something I am sore for days. That includes everything from bowling to shoveling snow. I think about it a lot, but havent even come close to disciplining myself to do something. I have no excuse!

When i was younger i used to not do any treatments at all since i was so healthy. I used to sing in a band ( in a smoky bar) basically i lived a "normal" life like all my friends did with the exception that i took medication. NOW its nothing like that at all. I got b.cepacia about 9 years ago, and i no longer go to any place that has smoke in it, i avoid being near anyone with a cold, i started using my vest on a daily basis about 3 and a half years ago after i had my second pulmonary embolization ( due to submassive hemoptysis). I also walk on my treadmill as often as i can and i try to stay as active as i can. I have never taken better care of myself and i realize i should have been doing all this for years. Its easy to be lackadasical about your health when it is still good, but one good scare and it all hits you that its time to "buck up" and get moving and improving. If you are feeling well, enjoy it all you can, but if you want to stay that way, try to stay as active as you can , Its so important. Being around smoke isnt the best thing for you, in fact it can be the worst. You want to take as good care of your lungs as possible , once the damage is done,,,, its done. Try to avoid it while you can.

Yes i do realize all that and i've changed my habits a lot throughout the last year i'd say (I'm 22 yrs old) . I am a lot more careful regarding a lot of aspects, especially being in smoky places. I only don't do more to improve my health if i feel like i'm starting to feel like i live FOR it completely , do you know. But of course it would be a mistake not do to as much as we can to improve our health because it's about us and the garantee of a better future for ourselves. Anyway, it's hard to explain sometimes. Thanks for your replies!

I am relatively obsessive about such things. I excercise regularly, when I'm really into it I keep a log of my activities. I use my CF to motivate me - getting out the door is usually the toughest part, no matter what you're doing - biking, running, or walking, the first step is the hardest for me, and I use the reason of CF to motivate me - as the earlier poster said, excercise and therapy will extend my life.

On the more generally issue of how I live - I am extremely healthy, and as much as I might want to think I'm "normal," I'm not. I have CF, which means that the consequences of doing some of the things that a "normal" person might do are much different for me than they are for "normal" people. I avoid smoke - fortunately Massachusetts has banned smoking in restaurants and bars, which is great. When i was living in DC, I did not go to smoking establishments. I leave areas where people are smoking, and generally do not subject myself to it. I do not think of doing all of things I do for my health as limiting -- keeping myself healthy gives me the freedom to do everything else that I want to do, and keeps me as "normal" as possible.

who wants to be normal anyway?

I'm pretty much exactly like Chris as far as CF motivates me...

I feel that, in general, CF will take away some of your freedoms... you may have freedom to choose what you do while you're healthy, but in the long run, as is the nature of CF, you will loose that freedom and either have to do more tune-ups, more treatments, or be on oxygen as a result of having that initial freedom. So, you either CHOOSE to take some time now and be a bit less free while YOU control it, or, in my view, the CF will choose it for you in the future. I want to choose as much as I can WHILE I can, so I choose now to go to the gym and do all my treatments... even when I feel healthy. That way, I will perhaps avoid an early decline in health which will probably lead to less freedom and this won't be my choice. Does this make sense?
