First time in hospital?

My daughter is 5.5wcf and hasn't been in the hospital yet but I did ask her doctor about it bc I don't like not knowing how it will be handled when the day comes. I am sure it will depend on her exact condition but the doctor told me that she would only be in the hospital until her meds were figured out, then she would be sent home for home IV's.

I really hadn't even thought of how treatments are done though (thanks for bringing that up!) so I will ask about that at the next visit bc I would really want to just do them ourselves. I am seriously paranoid about the hospital and would want as little contact with nurses, RT, etc as possible.

My older daughter was hospitalized when she was about 2, 16 and 18 months old and then again at 3 years old, but they were due to digestive issues, not lung issues. She did have a regular IV, but only for fluids.

Her first PICC was right after she turned 9 years old. She had a nasty MRSA flare up. She was on three IV meds, and stayed in the hospital for about 6 days. She spent 8 more days at home on IVs. I, too, was a nervous wreck! Thank God my little sister is a Pediatric RN at St. Louis Childrens Hospital, and she is my nepehw with CF's mom, so she has A LOT of experience in this category

It really wasn't that difficult, I was just very nervous at first about hurting/harming her in some way. But, we got through it. She has not been on IVs since, although we thought she may have to go in just a few days ago.

My youger daughter has never been hospitalized nor on IV antibotics, and she is 9.

Hey Katie,

I was a late dx 44 y/o.. Dont remember what the reason for first admission was..

At first they were doing peripheral IVs on me which was insane.. Then i moved onto Picc lines, then a port (the port had to be removed due to DVT,blood clot) I never just got a picc and when directly home, always spent about a week or so in then went home to finish up IV's ..

The CF center i go to now does try to keep you out and away from germs if at all possible..

To me , CPT in the hospital is the best in getting me better quicker. Of course it depends on if the RT knows their stuff or not
I have always felt that GOOD CPT is better than the vest.. Since i changed centers i was taught the correct way of using vest and it has made a huge difference..

Is Ellie going in? If so i hope and pray all goes well. Take care, keep us posted and God Bless .... joni

The first time I went in I was 3mos old and stayed in the hospital for 2mos. Didn't go back in the hospital again until I was 5(pneumonia) and then not again until I was 18. I intially got peripheral IV's but I kept blowing them so now all I ever get is PICC lines. I usually am in the hospital about 1 week and then go home to finish the cleanout although the last time I just had the PICC line put in and went home that day. They just did blood draws more frequently to be sure my levels were ok.
