Going off Prevacid?

I get the feeling from a recent post in the Adults section that gastric acid blockers of some kind might be a life-long requirement for CF'ers. However, I am concerned about the long term use of Prevacid (or any proton pump inhibitor) based on information I have from a very trusted nutritionist and even from the drug's manufacturer.

Now that Katy can swallow enzymes whole, it seems logical to me that the capsule will help the microspheres have a better chance of making it past the stomach before they are activated.

I am going to ask the doc at our CF visit tomorrow (so he can roll his eyes at my crazy questions again!) but I wonder if any of you have been able to take your children off of Prevacid or whatever you have been using. I would appreciate the advice of any of our natural remedy experts as well. I do know that when she was first diagnosed, if we missed her Prevacid there were dire consequences; that's how much difference they made for her. But those were the applesauce days....... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Dana,

You know, everyone is different, but if my son misses his prevacid, we know it by the next morning..stomach cramps, oily leakage, many trips to the bathroom...in fact, we are pretty much housebound. He is dependent on it. He is nine, takes pancrecarb ms-8, and has been on prevacid since age 3.

I asked the doctors about this, Dana, when Alyssa first went on the prevacid. I voiced my concern about the long term use of prevacid and about the issues with calcium absorption. I was kind of poo poo'd as being ridiculous. I almost got the feeling they weren't quite saying, "let's worry about the short term issues, with CF we will deal with the long term issues later." I'd be very interested to hear what your doctor says. Alyssa has missed a dose of the prevacid lately and I don't see a difference. I believe if she was a little older and could tell me if there was a change, I'd try to cut it down or out.

I've been battling Ellie's CF doc about this for awhile, and he's agreed that once he is more comfortable with her weight, we can try and cut the Prevacid down or even out. Ellie is on it to aid in the digestion of her enzymes, but like a few of you, doesn't seem to have any changes whether she takes it or not. There is one mom on here that has worked with her doctor and compromised on taking a half tablet in the morning and half tablet at night (as opposed to a full one twice daily). Another mom has had good success with apple cider vinegar as an alternative. If you're interested and she doesn't see this herself, I'll try and track down her info.
