Going off Prevacid?

My guess would it's going to depend on your daughter. I wasn't on any acid meds as a child. I didn't go on acid meds until I was 10 or so and that was because I had ridiculously painful acid reflux. So I'm stuck taking it... looks like forever, though I was on Prilosec until it became OTC, and now I'm on Nexium. If taking her off of it gives her a good deal of pain, my guess would be she might be stuck taking one. If it doesn't seem to affect how she feels, then maybe you can.

We were determined to get him off the acid blocker as well and at 2 we were successful. He hasn't required one since. We did a few things which helped him make the transition. One, we slowly weaned him off it. Second, we switched to Pancreacarb enzymes which have sodium bicarbonate in them. He has done better on these. We continue to stick to an anti-inflammatory diet rich in antioxidants, DHA, healthy fats and little to no sugar/processed foods.

You can also read about supporting the acidic body with foods. Many foods can help lower acidity and create a more alkaline environment in the digestive system. There are several books on this topic. I believe sea salt and magnesium help (we use both). Apple cider vinegar (Braggs) is especially helpful in reducing acid naturally without suppression. I do not know the amount off hand but I have read of several moms who have given a bit before each meal and have great success and better gain with no need for acid blockers. Baking soda added to the bath can help reduce acidity in the body as well.

Best wishes,

hey guys -

I weaned Hunter (3.5yrs old) off of Prevacid about 4 months ago. He was taking 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm...then went down to only 1/2 in the pm...then a 1/4 in the pm. then none. No problems seen during the weaning process. And definatley no problems with acid reflux or pain.

The one problem we have seen is a lack of weight gain - which i'm not sure is due to the Prevacid. He's been growing VERY slowly the past 3 yrs, but he hasn't really gained anything since he's been off the prevacid. If he doesn't gain by his next apt. his CF doc wants him to go back on the prevacid. I'd rather try the pancrecarb enzymes than put him back on prevacid. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> He takes creon-5 now. His nutritionist thought maybe we should up his enzyme dose, since he only takes 3 at a meal, but his dr. didn't want to do that and would like him to go back on Prevacid. I think I will lobby to give the Pancrecarb a shot at his next apt....at the same time it's scary seeing him fall of the growth chart - so maybe I will put him back on the prevacid. I just wish i knew what would help the most. *sigh*
