We were determined to get him off the acid blocker as well and at 2 we were successful. He hasn't required one since. We did a few things which helped him make the transition. One, we slowly weaned him off it. Second, we switched to Pancreacarb enzymes which have sodium bicarbonate in them. He has done better on these. We continue to stick to an anti-inflammatory diet rich in antioxidants, DHA, healthy fats and little to no sugar/processed foods.
You can also read about supporting the acidic body with foods. Many foods can help lower acidity and create a more alkaline environment in the digestive system. There are several books on this topic. I believe sea salt and magnesium help (we use both). Apple cider vinegar (Braggs) is especially helpful in reducing acid naturally without suppression. I do not know the amount off hand but I have read of several moms who have given a bit before each meal and have great success and better gain with no need for acid blockers. Baking soda added to the bath can help reduce acidity in the body as well.
Best wishes,
