Has anyone forgone a cf center for a pulmonologist?

We have had a few patients do this. It definitely depends on the Pulmonologist just like in any other case the doctor is what makes/breaks ya. I, peronsally, would prefer to stick with a CF Center, but there are crappy ones of them too.

One thing to consider about NOT going to an accredited CF Center is if you are interested in doing clinical trials & such that comes through the CFF. That & maybe other things normally wouldnt be available unless at an accredited CF Center.

Good Luck!

I considered looking for a regular adult pulm. in my local area because my ped. pulm. at the local CF center is leaving and the 2 that are left are new docs....I don't like that idea.

SOOOO I talked with my CF doc at a BIG center that I travel to and really like. She said that I am much better off seeing someone trained in CF than a regular pulmonologist with years and years of experience. So I am going to give them a try.

I did see a regular pulm. in another state and another time about 10 years ago. They had a fabulous office, all of the right equipment, spent lots of time with me.......I was under educated about CF at the time. Knowing what I know now, they did not have enough knowledge to give me the BEST care possible. They gave me adequate care; but, not the best. Research and development is coming too fast and furious to be somewhere that doesn't have access to the latest information. That is just mho though.

I have Dr Layish, in orlando. He is awesome. he is the first pulmonologist i have had and have been with him for 4 years. My lung function went from 32% to 38% and my weight went from 100 to 113 all in the last 6 months. Very aggressive treaments on his and my end have made for great results. The hospital, which I have only been admitted to once in 4 years, is a non teaching hospital, and they are very strict with cross contamination, you may get the same nurse, which in all honesty is going to happen in almost every hospital, but they take the necessary actions to keep the chance of contamination low. Moving to Orlando from Buffalo was the smartest thing I have ever done.

Mark has a private Pulmonologist and he is VERY happy with her. If it was up to him he'd never set foot in a "CF Clinic" again.
