I am known at Piper's school as one of "those" parents, so take this with a grain of salt (pun intended). First, if you don't have an IEP or 504 for Alyssa, please consider it. As to the snack issue, a 5-6 yr old is perfectly capable of understanding a statement like "Alyssa's tummy works differently than ours and she has to have lots of calories and salt every day to stay healthy". I would reply to the teacher's e-mail (so that the contents and reply of the last mail you sent & the teacher's reply is included), copying in the principal, and offering very sweetly to come speak with the class regarding Alyssa's CF and nutritional needs if necessary, but that Alyssa would be continuing to bring in snacks that meet her dietary needs. A part of me hated, and was very reluctant to be "that" parent, but Piper's needs come first. The benefit of it is that the school knows I mean business, and they stopped trying to gloss over things or placate me with empty promises.

<div>I went to a meeting that I thought was a 504 one, but when I got there, the principal said that we could just do a "medical plan" and if we needed a 504 later on get one.  Everyone (including the teacher) seemed very reasonable and accommodating, so I didn't push it.  But now, I think I'll have to.  <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"></div><div><br></div><div>This SUCKS!!!!!   </div><div><br></div><div>Lauren, I'll see if I can scan the list later...its ridiculous how specific it is.  I agree with you about all the branding and processed stuff.     </div>

<br>The multi page list DS had was baked name brand chips, fruit, veggies, low fat string cheese and nuts.  I'm with Lou Lou, continue to send high calorie chips for snacks until you can get this resolved with the school.

We had issues with me dosing my own enzymes when I was in school.  My doc about had a fit.  He wrote on a prescription pad:  "Jonathan has Cystic Fibrosis, which requires multiple medications to maintain his health.  If you continue to interfere with the dosing of his enzymes, you and your institution will be held responsible for any and all negative consequences."<br><br>He also gave me his pager number with instructions to page him the instant the school gave me problems.  It only took me paging him once.<br>

<div>Wow, Jonathan, that is AWESOME!!!</div><div><br></div><div>We went to the pediatrician today and she wrote a similar, though more subtle, script.  It said that Alyssa should be able to eat whatever she wants, whenever she wants to support a high fat, high calorie diet.   The nurse called me at home after lunch to report that Alyssa didn't eat anything and so she let he come back for an afternoon snack of nuts.   I'm going to set up a cabinet in the nurses office with extra snacks there for her to go anytime she wants.   I think the teachers has finally heard me.  </div>

We always meet with the school every year before school starts.  We meet with the principal, pe teacher, nurse, and any teacher that will be involved with her for the year.  We go over meds, bathroom breaks, gatorade privledges, Healthy eating for her, smoke and dust on the playground, absences, and anything else I can think of that we may have had problems with before.  I learned to add the Healthy eating after Abby told me that she did not want butter on her bread because it was not good for her.  I tried to explain that it was and why, but I found out that mom was not as smart as her teacher who apparently in her eyes new everything.  <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">  Every since then that is one of my main topics to go over with the new teacher.  They are now very sensitive when going over nuitrition and they explain to the class why Abby is special and lucky in that she gets to eat lots of fatty salty things.  <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">   I am a very meak person and shy away from confruntation.  Abby has given me a backbone.  <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">  My doctor has always told me that if you can keep the weight on then her chances of being healthy are much better.  If that means chips at snack you better believe that my daughter will have chips at snack.  Fight for her girl!
