I can give Alex a bottle of only breastmilk and he will not take it. I have tried 3 different types of bottles including Nuk which is supposed to be the most like the breast, but he clenches his mouth shut and turns his head. In the last two days, I bet he has only drank 6 ounces of milk. I have several reasons that I am quitting and don't really want to budge on that, but if you can think of anything to help. Also, besides the fact that I slowed the pumpings to 3 times in a 24 hour period, is there anything else to do to keep from getting engorged or to reduce the pain while drying up. Thanks, I'm pulling my hair out. It's killing me to quit bfing as it is.

HELP

My daughter won't take breastmilk out of a bottle either - or a sippy. I had to pore 50 oz of frozen milk out b/c of it. (O yeah I cried).

I would maybe try 1/2 BM and 1/2 formula. Or just move straight to formula. They make a bottle that is shaped like a breast http://www.adiri.com/ A friend of mine had great success with these.

If he is not willing to drink anything then you need to keep breastfeeding until you can get him drinking enough out of a bottle. I would suggest trying the bottle first and then if he doesn't take it you need to nurse. Over time he will get used to the bottle and stop nursing BUT until then its very important he gets 24 or more oz of SOME kind of milk a day.

As far a pumping how long are you planning on pumping? If you stick with 3 times a day for a week, then move to 2 times for 2 weeks, and then 1 time a day for 2 weeks you should be able to drop the last session with no engourgement.

HELP

I think you need to BF immediately since he is not getting enough to eat and continue until you can get him to take a bottle. One step at a time. Breast milk from a bottle does freak some babies out so transitioning to formula can be easier.

One thing I remember when we occasionally gave Amelia formula in the car is that we used the ready to serve liquid. It was the Similac 8 oz bottles and you can use a standard size nipple and nipple ring right on it rather than use a separate bottle. Very convenient. Amelia liked the liquid but not the powder stuff. It's more expensive but maybe it will help the transition. Hmmm, maybe try having someone give it to him in the car while you drive? Heh heh.
