Sorry, not really a 'guy' topic, but as my wife has BF for the last 10 years and so far weaned 4.5 kids successfully w/o crying I have to reply to LouLou.

Your idea is absurd. Why would you leave your husband with a starving baby and hope the baby gets hungry enough & cries long enough to give up??

There are many reasons (not relevant) why somebody weans a baby before they are ready , but I can't believe many do it with the desire to punish the child....which is what using starvation to force weaning is.

Sorry again for hijacking.

Well, I woke up throughout last night giving Alex breastmilk with the syringe and this morning, I tried a really cheap bottle that we had bought in a 3 pack for storing pumped milk. Anyway, I had to widen the holes in the nipple, because it was so cheap nothing would come out and Alex readily took it (formula only, though ). Oh well, I'll give him breastmilk via syringe and formula from the bottle until I've used up what I've pumped. Thanks again for all of your advice on how to wean my baby. What an ordeal! Oh and thanks Jessica for the advice on not getting engorged. I am now down to twice a day with no pain!

Jeana,
Hang in there. This too shall pass. That was a good idea to open the nipple more and make it easier to drink like the medicine dropper.
Sometimes we have to do strange things to get to where we want to be.
Creative problem solving is what parenting is all about. You have to be confident and loving. (I say this but don't get me wrong--I struggle every day.)
Kids definitely have nipple preferences, but don't break the bank either. For my son who had the most abrupt transition, the issue was more wanting the breast than hating a particular brand of bottle. He needed to accomplish two things 1) get the rhythmic sucking from a bottle down pat 2) realize that there would be no more breast. This takes between a couple days and a couple weeks in my experience.
Good luck!

Did you try mixing 3/4 formula with 1/4 breastmilk? The formula would cover the taste of the milk but still give him the immunities.

My daughter always like the cheaper nipples better. Also I wanted to add that he might not want to switch b/c bottle nipples tend to drip faster than a breast would and babies tend to get choked. You may have to find a really slow flow nipple vs a faster flow.

Just make sure that he is getting atleast 24 oz of whatever you give him!
