Hemoptysis

I too have started getting hemoptysis since last year. I haven't had it near as often as I hear people here talk about it though. The first ever I had it was last year around May then a Month later in June and then recently last month. I read and got advise on this years ago from another forum before I even had it and the person who was actually adoctor recommended taking 1000-2000mg of Lysine. What the Lysine does is constrict your blood vessles to help stop the bleeding and allow for the burst vessle(s) to clot and heal quickly. From the time I was told this I always kept a bottle of Lysine on hand and I can say for sure doing this helped me so far in the episodes I had.

Another good tip is don't reach up and grab things in very high places. If you have to, get a chair to stand up on and get whatever you need to get.

Back in 2005 I was reaching up in my closet (good example) and just felt this huge burst in my chest. It felt like mucus was breaking up. Then I rushed to the bathroom and started coughing up 3-4 8oz cup fulls of blood. Had my Mom to call the ER. I didn't even wait for it to quit. I had an infection going on at the time as well.

It did quit once I got to the hospital. I coughed up a few of Alveoli in the sink. I couldn't get to the toilet quick enough. They look like little balls or marbles. All the blood was very clotty.

My oxygen saturation was down to 84%, my head was pounding (co2) and felt like it was going to explode. I could only breathe out maybe an inch. I couldn't walk. I was in the hospital for 5 days, went home on IV meds for 10. I was left on oxygen 24/7 and it was very hard for me to walk while in the hospital. I had to gain my strength back.

I would say there were several balls (Alveoli) in the sink. Did I save them? Stupid me DID NOT save them, I didn't know what they were. We were just panicking, because this was the first time anything like this happened to me. I was more concerned about my Mom, who's face turned white as a ghost from seeing my bathroom sink/mirror looking like a scene from Friday The 13th, with blood dripping from my mirror. My face looked like I went 5 rounds with Rocky Balboa.

So after researching online when I got back home, I told my doctor exactly what it was that I coughed up, and she didn't think it was Alveoli, but I know it was. I've seen them here online (video) It did a lot of damage to my lungs, which I still suffer from to this day.

Moral of the story: If you cough up anything, KEEP IT! I wish I did.

Karla, thanks for asking how I'm doing. I'm on day 14 of hospital stay and am having hemoptysis off and on still. Right now I'm on again. It's so frustrating! It's more overall rose-colored mucus, not solid blood. I was taking 5mg of vitamin K daily, now they just increased it to 10mg. I'm reluctant to stop all my airway clearance stuff and so are my doctors. They're telling me to continue with it, although I did dilute the 7% saline to 3.5%. I'm sort of playing it by ear as I go. For example, my sputum was redder after the second respiratory treatment today so I may forgo the hypertonic and CPT tonight. I do have a stationary bike that I ride while I do albuterol & 7% - just kind of an easy, high cadence ride.

What bothers me, is that I'm not sure what the continued hemotysis indicates. Stupidly, I didn't think to ask, but will do so tomorrow. Is it due to infection still? Maybe my lungs can't take the high pressure of coughing anymore and there is nothing to be done about it. I'll let you know what the doctors say.
