How do I stop coughing?

Usually I have to eat a popsicle or something. I have to get something cold most times to kind of numb my throat.

Also I know suppresants are discouraged but if you can't stop coughing and need rest I think it might not be a bad idea. I usually take Robitussin CF when I need something.

You can take some cough suppressants. I can take Robitussin DM (liquid or gel caps), Delsym (12hr), or Atuss-DM (Rx). I was always told to take DM products, none of the others, because it is a cough suppressant and expectorant. It helps thin the mucus to get it out but helps control your cough. It wont stop it, but it will lessen it. Granted we are told to avoid suppressants as much as possible, but sleep is extremely important. Lack of sleep will equal a slower, harder recovery. Also if you do take any type of suppressant, make sure u do your treatments (albuterol/vest), you might even need to do more a day until you are well. Depends on how hard u are coughing, how much you are hurting from all the coughing...it doesnt hurt to lay off the saline (its just salt water) but that's ur call. If it is helping u get the mucus out, keep doing it. If it is making things worse, dont. Hope you start feeling better.

As mentioned above mints help. I also do what I callmy "lemon trick" I put a little lemon juice in a cup add salt and swish it around to stir. Then I drink it. It helps break things up or just stop the cough.

I've also been using Robitussin DM or CF ( walmart brand) at night, I know this is a no no but i need sleep!!!

I also prop myslef up on a bunch of pillows.

As Blindhearted said above , I alwasy get the suppressant and expectorant combo when I need something - and as a rule suppressants are a no no, but sometimes I find you gotta do what you gotta do. Propping up pillows helps me too. I also use a vaporizer with eucalyptus oil in it. I know a lot fo people here don't do vaporizers, but I stand by mine firmly as a life saver sometimes. Hope you feel better.

Delsym is the best ever! It doesn't knock you out like Nyquil, but it will stop your cough enough to sleep. I only use it once in a great while if the kids have been up coughing at night a lot and need to sleep.

I've had very good luck with sipping Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea. The honey coats the throat and keeps it soothed so that I'm not coughing from the throat irration, the vanilla is one of few extracts that doesn't make me wheeze (unlike pepermint and eucalyptus) and the chamomile is good for relaxing.

I don't use this remedy all by itself. I'm not an herbalist or anything like that. But it's nice to have found something that works without being full of chemicals.

There is also a brand of tea called "Breathe Easy Tea" Its main ingredients are things like eucalyptus, fennel and licorice. The tea bags look like they're full of grass clippings..lol. I tried it once but found I was allergic. If you're interested in trying it, it's relatively inexpensive. Here's were you can buy it online. I've seen it in the grocery store too.

Thanks for all the good advice. I talked to my nurse at the cf clinic and she did say to avoid suppresants. At the time I was feeling pretty good so I didn't push it with her. Unfortunatley, I'm feeling worse now. I tried to go out and run some errands this afternoon and the cough came back.
