How well do you smell?

I haven't been able to smell for years...and I have very minimal sinus involvement, so I'm not sure why I lost my sense of smell.

I can only smell things like gasoline, fire-sometimes and a few air freshners. Normally I can't smell food cooking, flowers, candles, shampoo, etc.
It sure came in handy when I had to change diapers years ago!

I think I smell nice! Ok just kidding but when I read this thread the first thing that popped into my mind was horrible, these IV's ooze out of my pores LOL.

In all seriousness I smell EVERYTHING especially smoke I can tell if a doctor smokes even if they only do it in the morning before coming to work, when poeple say they are going to quit they only get accolades-sp? after I smell them because I can ALWAYS tell. Overall I wish I could trade with some of you and tone mine down a bit. I do have a tremendous amount allergies and sinus pain pressure associated with that but I have no true sinus involvement.

Yes, loss of smell affects your tasters.

I have been hard-of-smelling since birth it seems. I've had a few nasal polyps removed as a kid, but my dr has said that had nothing to do with it, since other cfer's, without the sinus surgery, have this problem.
Also, I was never on any meds other than enzymes as a kid.

It's not as if I can never taste or never smell, but those senses are greatly diminished, and they come and go.
I've noticed I can smell more on more humid days, (which is a rare occasion where I live.)
However, I can smell a smoker from a mile away.
Smells don't just waft by me, sometime I have to be right on top of something with my nose before I can smell it.

I have to have my hubby check refrigerated food for me, to make sure it's still good - I've been known to give myself food poisoning.

I was just driving down the road this morning with the windows open and smelled the (desert) "greenery" and thought "Wow,is this what everyone smells all the time???" My thoughts drifted to how much I was missing out on. I realized my spirits were somewhat lifted - just from that small sense of smell. I started wondering how much my loss of smell and taste was attributed to my depression.

that's MY experience, but not all have this problem, or to the same degree.

I am the same as NoExcuses. I have very bad sinuses, but good sense of smell. I almost wonder if though I smell things other people can't, if I may be smelling them sort of...I don't know what I am trying to say but...off? Seems like if someone CAN smell what I'm noticing, then they don't find it nearly as offensive. I just wonder if even though I smell everything, if it might be a bit askew. lol

Also, as to what cfsucks said, I thought you meant how we actually smell, also. My first thought was to say "Great! I shower every day AND brush my teeth!"
