Sorry to repeat this topic but I couldn't find a recent one on hypertonic saline.
I participated in a study yesterday while at the dr's office (but not associated with my cf clinic) that involved hypertonic saline. They pretreated with albuterol and then I spent 21 minutes nebbing hypertonic saline. We did spirometry in between the different concentrations. I didn't get up a lot of sputum (but more than usual). But about 1 hour later I felt fabulous. Possibly better than I've ever felt before. I was disappointed to go to sleep even because I knew I wouldn't feel as good today. It even helped sinus congestion, I think. We only did up to 5% concentration. The person administering the protocol suggested that I'd see better results most likely at a higher concentration.
So my question is how do you get the Dr. to prescribe this wonderful elixir (or do I even need a prescription). I also don't have an ultrasonic nebulizer at home just the pulmoaide and a pari, would it be as effective with a regular nebulizer? Today has been a let down in comparison to how clear I felt yesterday. The hypertonic saline did bring my o2 sat down by a few percentage points but they said that's normal as the sputum coming up was blocking just slightly my ability to get oxygen. But once it was cleared out my o2 sat jumped up and I blew better spirometry than I have in years.
