Hey all

I'm 17 and in high school and i'm finding it hard to keep up with my peers when we do running or play any kind of sports, i try to do my best but i always start coughing and a couple weeks ago i had a bit of a down fall by coughing up blood which i have NEVER done in my life and it was a shock so my doctor asked me not to do physio and exercise which is a pain because i want to stay on top of CF.....So i'm just wondering if you guys have any advice for a 17 year old girl who is having a rough time just keeping up with her health i really need it.

Rebekah,
I can't completely relate b/c I've never coughed up blood. But I totally understand the desire to want to be able to "keep up" with those around you. I run 3 days a week, but maybe for you it should start with taking a walk after dinner or in the morning every day. Pick something that's not overwhelming and not too taxing on your body. Work up to longer distances or faster paces. Even little stuff like taking the stairs instead of the elevator can help. Don't be afraid to know your limits, too. I know that if I really push myself on a run, I'll probably be worn out for the rest of the day and need to get a good night's sleep that night. Doesn't mean the running isn't good, just means I have to take special care of myself afterwards. Drink lots of water too! And in the summer, don't forget to pop a few salt tablets now and again. Don't get discouraged, any activity is better than none!

My email is sideburns.larsen@gmail.com -- Email me if you'd like a detailed exercise plan that should help you out.

And I know it's irritating, but don't exercise unless your physician says you can. I'd suggest seeing him and asking what it will take to get you in condition to exercise, because for a girl your age it is extremely important that you be able to exercise and develop properly.

Best wishes,
B
