So I was talking to my boss the other day(a lengthy conversation mind you) where I brought up that there were some things she didn't know about me that I wanted to go over with her next time we were together. She replied that if I was talking about my disease she already knew about it. This is where it gets good, how does my boss know about my disease??? I mean all of my employees know about my having CF so it must have been one of them that sold me out, right??? Oh no!!! She said that the owner of our company came to her and asked what was wrong with me. She told him she had heard that I had CF from a couple of co-workers but I had never directly discussed it with her. So how does the owner of the company know???? Well it appears as though our HR dept. was reviewing our claims paid(we are self insured) and noticed that my bills we extremely high. They then took it upon themselves to research my work history and noticed that I have never called in. They brought it to the owner who brought it her to make the accusation that I was taking time off without turning it in and scamming the company. My boss who is very loyal to me told him that I work 7 days a week and if I missed an hour here or there I more than make up for it(BTW I am salary). I mean I work so much that I actually give back over 100 PLT hours annually because I don't even use them for vacation days! So my question is what exactly were they looking for? I asked my boss and she just told me I was being paranoid, I don;t think I am. Anyway, do they think they actually have a right to compare my confidential medical records to my work history...Can you say HIPAA violation? I hope my reputation throughout the company as the best will help this thing go away but I am afraid it is just the first sign of a discrimination case to come.

I wonder if being self insured makes a difference with the HIPPA laws...hmmm!

I dont know Luke.....I hate it when these sneaky things happen. It makes me feel like I am waiting for the other shoe to drop!

I hope that your work attendance and loyalty pay a large roll in things for ya!

That sucks!

Like Mel said, I'm not sure if self insured makes any difference but that is definitely a HIPPA violation but "normal" standards.

Not sure what you can do about it unless of course you don't like the job. If you're really pissed off then I'd contact an attorney about it. If you're just kind of pissed off, then I'd speak to your boss and HR about it, or maybe write a letter but then there's a record and you might make future problems for yourself.
