That sucks!

Like Mel said, I'm not sure if self insured makes any difference but that is definitely a HIPPA violation but "normal" standards.

Not sure what you can do about it unless of course you don't like the job. If you're really pissed off then I'd contact an attorney about it. If you're just kind of pissed off, then I'd speak to your boss and HR about it, or maybe write a letter but then there's a record and you might make future problems for yourself.

I feel for you, man, I do.

But these things happen more than you realize. Federal government puts out laws all the time, but they're broken left and right. HR is supposed to not reveal medical status info, but they do all the time anyway. It's just real world.

I'm not saying it's right. But it happens unfortunately <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

The "that sucks but oh well" responses given so far are really surprising to me - I thought people would be much more angered about this.

Luke, of course it's your decision and you know your job, company, and co-workers far better than any of us. But if it were me, I would not want to work for a company that violated my privacy in such a way and then actually tried to use it against me as was done to you. It's awesome that your immediate supervisor is so supportive of you and stuck up for you like that, but the bottom line is that the owner of the company sees nothing wrong with HR taking it upon themselves to "investigate" what they deemed to be suspicious behavior on your part. And I don't think it matters that the company is self-insured - HIPPA laws are supposed to protect the privacy of all people.

It sounds like you are a good, dedicated employee and that maybe they don't deserve you - I'd take my skills elsewhere. That is just me though, and like I said, I don't know any details about your personal situation, company, etc. This opinion is just based on the limited information I read in your post.

Good luck - I'm pissed off for ya!!
