We are all different people with different opinions and passions and everything else, which is great, but sometimes it can turn this support group into more of a debate group, which can beeven more harmful to a person who is already wounded. I am wondering if it would be beneficial for us to create lists for the private topic category. That way, when someone needs support on a controversial issue they can start a private topic and cut and paste the apprpriate list. Or, if a new member unintentionally hits a hot button, one of the more seasoned members can instruct them on how to create a private topic, or better yet, create a private topic for them.
This is something we can do ourselves without increasing the workload of the moderators and web designers, and it won't create even more categories which no one is going to use. Of course, if the moderators or web designers want to help, they are more than welcome.
One person will have to be in charge of keeping and updating the lists, which I am more than willing to do. What I would need is suggestions for topics which should be included along with short descriptions of how they are meant to be used. Then, people will tell me which lists they would like to be on and I will add them.
Obviously, we would have to use the honor system as far as people asking to be on a list simply to make problems. Since I don't have the ability to do background checks or anything like that, I would be adding names to the lists indiscriminately. However, these sort of problems would hopefully be few and far between, and even when they do happen it is just as easy to take someone off a list as it is to put someone on.
So, if you think this is a good idea, let me know and give any suggestions you might have. If no interest is shown, I will simply abandon the project. Here are some examples of topics:
Abortion: A list of people who will support others regarding an abortion, or want to have a discussion on abortion without starting a right-to-life argument
CF Related Pregnancy: A list of people who will support Cfers or carriers who are pregnant or want to become pregnant (discussion on abortion or adoption not allowed)
Recreational Drug Use: A list of people who are willing to have a discussion on recreational drug use without getting into issues of morality
Hopes for a Cure: A list of people who want to discuss the possibility of a cure in the future without skepticism or negativity
Realistically Speaking: A list of people who want to talk about reality without hearing others whine about negativity
Obviously, I don't agree with some of these veiwpoints, but I was trying to be balanced. Anyway, the more ideas the better, so don't be shy. Unlike the categories, it does not matter if a list is never going to be used, since they will not be cluttering up the forum, but will be available in an inconspicuous off-site location to be used should the need ever arise.
