if you knew your unborn child had cf would you abort it

I don't think that I would, but then again, I've never been in that situation. Therefore, if I was in that situation, I might have a completely different view of things.

No, I could not abort a child, even if I knew they had CF.

I did not know I was a CF carrier, although knew there was a possibility because my nephew had CF. Never in my wildest dreams thought my husband could carry the gene also... today there is so much more access to information than what there was just 10 years ago when I became pregnant. I NOW know that I was much less educated in the disease than what I thought I was at the time.

I do have two children with CF, and I did not know my older daughter had CF until I was already 5 months pregnant with my second daughter. I always wanted three children, but never could get myself to try for the third, but not because I was afraid that they child would have CF and suffer. I was afraid that I would not be able to be able to reasonably take care of three with CF if that were to happen. Then I was also torn between if the child didn't have CF, how would the child adjust to having to siblings with CF.

I do feel, maybe wrongly, that our children today are so much better off with the medicines and treatments than what some of the adults with CF had as children and don't always suffer as much. I am very optimistic that there will continue to be advances to help my girls. They are so beautiful, and love life so much. I cannot imagine not having them here.

And maybe if they begin to have more problems I might see things differently. But right now, they are the most precious gifts I have ever been given and I will do everything I humanly can to keep them as healthy as possible. And I pray that someday they will not hold it against me for giving birth to them<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

This is a tough subject.

That being said; my doctor has advised me to not get pregnant. Not only do I have CF but other medical problems as well. If I accidentally got pregnant and was able to care the pregnancy to term then I would.

However; since I was told "no" by my doc I have had a tubal ligation. I got this done b/c I could not have an abortion. I just wouldn't be able to do it.

I think having the tubal (although it was hard for me to give up the idea of having more children) was the smartest thing I have ever done.</end quote></div>

I applaud and support your decision on such a difficult subject. I also have weighed the matter and decided that pregnancy and parenting is not something I can handle in light of my health status. (CF is just one aspect of my health issues.)

That being said, I'll now answer the question of the original post. <b>If</b> I had gotten pregnant during that brief window when my husband and I had decided "no kids" and when we actually went through the procedure to make that a permanent reality...then we would have <b>seriously considered</b> an abortion, regardless of whether the fetus might have had CF.

Admitting that is very difficult for me.

Thankfully things never went further than the mere hypothetical, and now we don't have to think about such heart-wrenching things regarding whether to have children. The decision has been made and we have much peace about it.

<i>"i mean in all honestly if someone gave people with cf a crystal ball before they were born to show them the life of someone with cf and how it affects a person on a daily basis i bet many wouldent opt to come on this earth" </i>

Being a guy I don't feel I can answer the original question. Thought I would answer the second part if it's ok. I would have still chosen to live even if I somehow knew the outcome before I was born. I guess I would see it through that crystal ball like this. I'm filling a gap and if it wasn't me, then someone else would have to suffer through it.

Although I am pro- choice, If I had known during my pregnancy that my 10 month old son had CF I would have in<b> NO</b> way have aborted my child! It could have been <b>ANY</b> disease, I still would not have even thought about terminating my pregnancy. For this reason, my sister, who is pregnant, has decided not to even get tested for CF during pregnancy, because it wouldn't matter either way! Plus, she needs to enjoy her pregnancy without the worry. By the way, my state does mandatory testing, so her baby will be tested!
I would also like to add, I would in <b>NO</b> way think differently of someone who made the decision of abortion. Every ones life is different, priorities are different, and we don't always no the other persons reasoning or hardship in life. <b>Just my little opinion though!</b>

I agree with PurpleMartin. What if your child had down syndrome, sickle cell, or anything else you can find out before they are born? It's not the baby's fault it's born that way. It takes two people to make it that way. I do believe in pro choice because everyone has their own right to what they want to do with their body but I totally believe that to take away a person's life because they have a defect is wrong.

Absolutely not. I wouldn't have an abortion for any reason. We had a very strong indication that our son would have CF around my 20th week of pregnancy. Never once did the thought enter my mind.

I honestly don't think I would have an abortion if I knew my child had CF. Part of that may be that my experiences with CF have not been extremely severe and that my case is relatively mild, but I really don't think that I could have an abortion because the baby had CF and be okay with myself.

Just from being on this forum is clear how many CFers live full lives. Granted, they are more difficult than average, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to live. I understand the counterargument as well...but that's just my 2 cents
