Incontinence in CF women...

I have noticed over the last couple of years that I pee my pants a lot. Like, sometimes over four or five times a month. It's like, one moment I'll think, I sort of have to pee-- and the next I'm pissing in my pants because I just can't stop. It's sort of funny, but ultimately it's just embarassing. I'm young (23 with CF) and I don't really want to talk to my docs about it quite yet. I was wondering if there were any tips from other CF women with similar problems. The LAST thing I want is surgery "down there"... I do Kegels <sp?> and was wondering if anyone else had any other things that seemed to help with their pants peeing problem?

Oh, I'm starting to pee too. I'm 28 and when I cough....gush. There is the pee. It's not horrible but I can notice it. My doc's do ask if I do this and I'm not honest with them. Its embarrassing, I know. I don't do the big pants pee as you described, but could you use Poise pads or something. I know that is not the best suggestion but at least you won't get it all over you.
Ask Emily65roses. I think she has posted this before.
Good luck.

I've had it too and I'm only 23 too. it's just part of the game. I wear just a thin pantyliner.
That's about it!

I do have this problem from time to time. It's not a whole bladder-emptying. It's just I start to cough, and then "uh oh, I had better go" because it starts to slip. It's enough to make me change my underwear, in most cases. So it depends on how much leakage you have, but if I'm having trouble, sometimes I'll throw on a pantyliner. Thin enough that it's not uncomfortable or diaper-like.

No one likes to hear this because it is embarassing, but your best bet would be to tell your doc and see what they say. I haven't told my doc only because it's not a big enough deal for me yet. And he's a guy, but I *adore* my doc, so when it comes to it, and I need to tell him, I will. If it's embarassing and you wouldn't feel comfortable telling almost anyone, then you either have to work around it, or muster up the courage. If it's your specific doc (if you have a male, or you're just not comfortable with them), then I say change. You have to be as comfortable as possible (so as to feel fine talking about just about anything) with the doc you have.

Thanks, girls. Yeah... I definitely have the drip-when-I'm-coughing problem, but I also pee my pants. I peed my pants at the grocery store once. Haha. God.

Emily... I have read a lot of your posts but never really talked to you before but you are very well spoken and give great advice. I appriciate it.

Okay.

I definatly think it's becoming a big thing with people with cf and incontience i keep hearing about it and i did a servey on it at my clinic like a year ago.. i think they were looking to see if lung infections can cause it to be worse.. and i wasn't thinking into it until after because it was always just something that happened.. then i joined this site and low and behold a whole bunch of others seem to have the same problem... and once again it seems to be all the women who have cf who are most effective (isn't great to be a girl with cf)... usually when i know it's going to be badi try to wear a pad, but sometimes i honestly consider like an actual like poise pad to help out... i also pee like 1 million times a day and like 3 or 4 times a night.. and i constantly have glucose tolerance tests done because think it's diabetes but it always comes back normal.. i think i just have over active bladder...

She told me she was going to try to remember to start bringing it up to the other female CFers at clinic.. Anyone notice it more in the bathtub???

I hate it... with a passion...

Bringing up an old topic to see if there are any new inputs on the subject...

For me, it's definitely worse when there's an active lung infection going on. In fact the incontinence starts before the infection is flared up enough to really make me feel run down, but I know it's coming because of the incontinence. The incontinence usually precedes the flare up by a day and I've found that if get extra rest and eliminate the stress (ie work crap) then I can often head off the flare up at the pass. But if I can't head off the full blown lung crud (or sinus) flareup, then woo wee, it can be bad. I'm 43 had 1 kid (no C-section here!) and I can tell you panty liners don't cut the mustard.

I've got an appt with the doc who specializes in that issue at the Adult CF Clinic in a few weeks. I'm hoping there's some good options for dealing with it! ~Juliet

Oh yes, me too! Only when I cough really hard or when I'm doing CPT though. Now that I'm pregnant it's happening A LOT so I'm having to wear a pad when I do CPT since it's almost guaranteed to happen.

I read an article in nursing school about CF and incontinence. It said that it's VERY common and that most people are shy or afraid to bring it up to their doctors because they're embarrassed. I'm not really sure if there's a treatment for it though besides Kegels. It's due to our muscles being affected by our coughing and they slack off or something like that.

The wonderful joys of CF - woohoo!

Yes, I've had this problem for a while and now that I'm older (48 today!) it's a constant problem. (Imagine crawling into bed for some romance and you COUGH! Need I say more????)

My dr. advised me to:

1. Empty my bladder often

2. Double pee - With this you pee until you feel you're empty, stand up, then sit down and sometimes you can trickle out some more. (This came from my mom's urologist)

3. I NEVER leave the house w/o wearing Poise anymore! Especially because of the car trip part!
