infant pft's

well, i'm in the hospital again with my son, was in for 2 weeks in december, now we're in for sepsis. Anyhow, they are going to do an infant pft on monday. I am in california and treated at miller children's hosptial in long beach. I guess it involves sedation, and putting the babies in this plastic box *kinda like when the kids in the nicu , using a vest and oxygen mask and i guess it forces them to blow out forcefully, equvilent to a regular pft.

**just wondering if any one has had this done?

i'm gonna let them do it as i think it will be good to have a baseline number this early, and i think it's good for research purposes etc. Maybe if this will become routine and babies will get more agressive treatment if necessary as this would be more sensitive than an xray.

well i had the pft done today. I watched, and it was pretty neat. I guess it showed some "mild airflow limitation at low lung volumes only" So my doctor said that the larger airways are good blowing at 106%, but that the lower smaller airways are at 72%. I figure this is pretty good with the first number, but the second number suprised me. He's been getting treatment sice 3 1/2 months. He's currently on xeophenx,hypertonic saline 7%, pulmozyme, and tobi. I guess I am greatful for the newborn screening and early treatment, cuz I figure if there is some impairment with all this treatment, i'm sure it would be much worse without it. Glad that we have a baseline number this young as well.

I overall had a good experience with this, and I will do it again.

I did not have it done on my son since he was diagnosed at an older age, but I remember other people bringing it up on this site. If you do a search on here you should find the older topics discussing it.I would be surprised if it is true that it is only offered at three centers though, I was thinking it was more widely used. I would think it would be useful information to have, not sure what the downfall would be except for the sedation, which wouldn't be a big risk.

My daughter did infant pft's. It was a good way to get a baseline and the sedation was the hardest part. They do it with Chloral Hydrate, which is a yucky tasting drink and some kids (like my daughter) are good at fighting it to stay awake. She was only able to do this twice because she outgrew the Chloral Hydrate dose but she started doing regular pft's at 2.5 years old.

I agree that there has to be more than 3 clinics with these, that just doesn't sound right.

I hope your son is feeling much better soon!
