is this an allergic reaction?

Alyssa started Bactrim on Wednesday night for a cough she's been struggling with for awhile now. Friday night she coughed so hard she puked, within an hour of taking the bactrim. I figured that she might not have had enough to eat with it and have been making sure she gets it with food and water since. Now there is no more vomiting, but today she has a rash around her mouth and chin. I don't think its anywhere else. She hasn't eaten anything different than normal -- though we did switch from vitamax to sourceCF vitamins this week. I'd find it odd if its a bactrim allergy since she's been on it before and we've been pushing the bactrim through her feeding tube, so wouldn't the rash be somewhere else??

I'm not sure what to do. Its not an awful rash, but its clearly there and atypical for her, she has no known allergies at all.

Any thoughts?

Hi Heather,
I would be more inclined to think it is a reaction to the Source CF since that is new, and administered orally. It could be a contact reaction. Is she chewing the vitamins or swallowing them? If she is chewing them, maybe there is some kind of dye in the vitamins that her skin does not like?

Regardless, a rash is a rash. When Andrew has had his reactions to ceftaz and cefoxitin his docs have always been more concerned with the rash than the high fevers he has run. I would call your doctor in the morning!

I will hope it is the vitamins!..That's any easy fix. Finding out Alyssa has developed an allergy to an antibiotic that has always worked for her would be a bummer.

Good luck, and I hope that cough goes away quickly!

DS is weird about his vitamins in that he likes to suck on them, keep them in his mouth for awhile and ends up with orange around his mouth from the color of his vitamin. They're pink chewables, but really, really orange in color. I sometimes get to work and find an orange streak on my blouse or sweater from giving me a hug before school.

The weird thing is that the new vitamins are the gel capsules. She doesn't bite them or anything, just swallows them whole. I agree, the vitamins would be an easier fix than the bactrim. I guess I need to call in the morning.

Call in the morning. Rash around the mouth can be due to the abx and seems more likely than the vitamin. Keep an eye on the rest of her for any sign of a rash- it can be anything from large hives to a tiny pinpoint kind of rash; or fever; or redness/puffiness of or near other mucus membranes (i.e. around the eyes, inside the mouth, the lips.) I've had an extremely severe abx reaction so always tell parents the same thing every time I see a post like this... always err on the side of caution and check in with the dr. You can develop a reaction at any time no matter how many times you've been on a drug, and Bactrim is one that is well-known for causing nasty allergic reactions.

Do you have Benadryl in the house? I'd have it around, just in case.

I hope it fades/turns out to be nothing! <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

My oldest daughter does not have cf but she was on bactrim for 1 month due to recurring uti infections and she vomitted every time she took it... she never got a rash tho... I had to have them switch the medication... Her peditrician told me that even taking it with food could cause a belly ache since its such a strong antibiotic... glad your lil one is not vomitting anymore but if she does that could be the reason... sorry I could not give you any more info about the rash.. Have you tried googling it and see if anything comes up?

It happens to my dd all the time. She takes an antibiotic once or twice with no problems and then all of a sudden she gets this rash the next time. I was also surprised at first, but it looks like it is not as unusual as I thought. In our case it was a delayed reaction (on day 8th or somehting), but they no longer give her Bactrim anyway.
