Judging Hurts

I am a junior in High School currently so I go through this stuff every now and then. Often times when my lungs are kinda junky due to the bad weather, a cold or flu, or something kids sorta make fun of me or yell at me to stay away from them in fear that I am contagious. Every year I have to tell my classmates, 'Hey, I have CF, I am not contagious' and all that. Some people care and then some people, it goes in one ear and out the other.

Really for me, I don't have a problem sharing my story with my battle against CF. I'd rather have people have the facts then make judgements based on me before they know anything. I know that I am posting quite late on this topic but I hope things have gotten better

BTW I am new here so, hello.

Also midnightblack1180, I hope you friend made it through her double lung transplant with success

I am a freshman in high school also and i am an inch or two away from 5 feet. I have a lot of girls in my class who think that they are so much better than everyone else. I know how you all feel and i have to get up earlier than most people to do my treatment and if i have to skip it I cough a lot at school. Some people make fun of me because "I am always sick". I am so happy there are other freshmen out there who are in the same situation as me. I have friends, but i have never met anyone else who has Cystic Fibrosis and they just don't understand sometimes. When i need to talk about my issues it is hard for them to understand. They treat me differently or always ask are you okay? I guess it's nice they care, but i don't like how they pity me and it makes me feel little and useless. Please comment on what you think about my situation or even if you are in the same situation as me.

Moms of CF kids:

There is a very serious message on this thread.

Lets say I'm a non CF kid in the 3rd grade. At snack time I'm limited to the schools strict list of approved snacks but there is a CF kid who is allowed to eat POTATO CHIPS. I like potato chips. I want potato chips at snack time but the school won't let me have them. OK now I resent the CF kid. Human nature being what it is, I will ALWAYS RESENT THE CF KID. I am not alone, everyone in my class resents the CF KID.

Now we get to High School. The CF KID has no friends. What a suprise. I may not even remember why I dislike him/her, but I do.

It is important not to call attention to our kids. It is hard enough with the coughing, the absences and the pills, without adding anything else to make them "different".

There is a cost/benefit analysis that needs to be done in "the third grade". If the cost of "potato chips" is that your child will be seperated from their classmates through high school and that they will be writing posts like those above. One must look at whatever benefit there may be.

I am a guy so it is a bit difficult for me too. I am 135 lbs and I have a G-Tube myself but I am pretty scrawny even still. Although I am not really ashamed of the G-Tube deal, I am worried about my male peers looking at me when changing out of my gym clothes. I don't have much muscle and also the scar tissue from having a feeding tube being put in my chest and having I think 5 hernia's removed when I was only 2 months old or so (I was born 3 months early in addition to having CF)

Also I was made fun of in my freshman year becasue some people though that because I have CF and possibly have fertility issues, that I was homosexual (I don't have a problem if anyone is homosexual, but I felt offended when these people barely even know me). Some people, guys and gals, just pick on us cause we are different and have more crud to deal with. But you know what, for those who pick on us, they are just shallow and are envious that many of us have a great outlook at life and we are not bothered by our disease.

We are all fighting our disease, no matter how bad it is and we have just got to keep on doing what we are doing. Do all we can do to keep ourselves healthy and not let people who have got some dumb bone to pick with us be ignored. Stay around true friends and family who will help you out when you are down.

That's my story and advice to you ma'm
