Kindergarten Next Fall

I know this has been brought up before...

DS will start all day kindergarten next fall. Wondering if/what documents I should have put into place regarding his enzymes, etc. I looked on our state's education website and the info on IEP's looks to be about 400 pages long and tends to lean more toward developmental/physical disabilities. One spot even indicated that we should've had an IEP put into place by the time he was 3 ?! though he doesn't participate in any public school district programs at this point. He goes to a private daycare center all day with a preschool program in the mornings.

Hi Liza,
You will probably recieve many different oppinions on this one. We do not have and IEP or 501 plan in place. We have never had a problem with Andrew getting his meds, being out sick, or even running IV meds at school. He is still in elementary school so things may be different when he is in high school and more of a "number" than a student. Right now everything is still handled pretty personally between myself, Andrew, and his teacher. It is really amazing how much people are willing to help and be flexible.

I have heard of school districts that are not nearly as accomodating, and for that reason it is good that these plans are in place for students who don't have the support of their teachers and school administration. I hope your elementary school will feel like a second home like ours does. I have noticed that the more involved you are at school, the more accomodating staff will be. I'm up at school almost everyday helping in class or doing PTA projects, and knowing the staff is a huge advantage.

Good luck! Wow...Kindergarten!!! Are you ready, Mom????

Hi Liza,

Maggie will also be starting kindergarten in the fall. She will be registered next month and then they do a screening in April. I have not looked into what sort of plan I need to get ready for kindergarten. I thought I would set up a meeting with the school nurse, her kindergarten teacher and principal(if needed) after she is registered. I want to make sure she can take her enzymes herself and not to have to go to the nurse's office for that. Also, do education on CF, hydration, infection control, etc. As far as resp treatments; we'll be doing those at home.

My primary concern is the enzyme issue. School policy is that medications are kept in a locked cupboard in the school office -- they don't have a full time school nurse and that "someone" -- not sure who, is responsible for distributing medications to students.

Other than that -- all of his other medications, vest/neb treatments are all done at home.

Next months there's a kindergarten open house for more information. This is also the first year the district is going to have all day kindergarten. Reading thru the IEP documentation it appears to be a bit over the top for DS's needs. My husband keeps telling me not to worry about it. It'll all work out. How come they never stress out about these things? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
