Melissa, sounds like you were on SSI, NOT SSDI. SSDI is ONLY affected if YOU, the person on the SSDI start working again and earn over $1000 a month. Medicare is a FEDERAL GOVERNMENT program and NOT a state program.

If, in fact you were on SSDI, then they have royally screwed you and I urge you to get in touch with myself (<a href="http://www.dafcf.org">www.dafcf.org, <a href="mailto:services@dafcf.org">services@dafcf.org or 452 280 7310) or Beth Sufian</end quote>

Really, I was on SSDI from working for 6 years before I was determined disabled.. I will be writing to you very soon. They told me my husband made too much and took all my money away and medicaid/medicare.. Hmmmmm makes me wonder whats going on..

Usually states require a marriage license to be filed within a certain amount of time after you get it or you are penalized with fees, or possible legal action. Some Christian book stores have certificates that can be filled out by the people who are involved in the ceremonial marriage. You can make one yourself on the computer that the officiant & 2 witnesses can sign. Just look at someone's real marriage license and see what is on them & put on the one that is made. You can even get paper that has certificate type of boarder to make it look more official. You will me missing your state seal & it wont be notarized If you are worried about loosing benefits, insurance or anything of that nature, I would not recommend you legally changing your last name to his because it may cause a red flag. Also check and see if you state recognizes common law marriage, that matters too. Some states, if you live together w/o being married for 7 yrs, then when 7 yrs come around as far as the state is concerned you are a legally married couple.

This was mentioned in a different post which is a good point.

For those that are not 'legally' married and not recognized by the state, you need to speak with an attorney.
Especially when serious health matters occur, hospitals will not accept taking orders from anyone that is not a legal representative (legal spouse). In addition, money from your estate would go to parents and siblings before your 'live in spouse'. And that can get sticky even in the most loving, generous families. Especially if or when someone is on life-support.

"Legal Marriage" didn't come about until after the American Civil War. It was created as part of segregation to keep whites from marrying blacks. Prior to that there was NEVER any government license to be married required. It was ceremony only recognized if it was conducted by Clergy, Justice of the Peace, or Captain of a ship.

Therefore, the misinterpretations and out of context bible references have zero bearing on marriage at all. And for those who think it's a sin otherwise blah blah, remember the bible, specifically the so called "Old Testament" was written as instructions for ONE tribe of people - Israel, if you are a believer in their god then you must go to the source - the Jewish people who will tell you that OTHER believers in their god have very very very few rules to follow and they are called the Seven Noahide Laws none of which have anything to do with paying the government for permission to get married either.

When you start to understand this and actually research the so called Old Testament and Judaism you can see why they have a hard time with christianity especially modern christianity.

There's also the fact that the planet has billions of people on it from hundreds of nations the vast majority of whom have their own gods (which the OT btw does not deny exist nor condemns unless you are an Israelite, in fact it supports that they do).

So in short, take the religious argument and stuff it because the requirements about "marriage" in your religion only apply to YOU.
This is why everyone, married or not, needs to have an advanced directive and a living will. You can do your own will online for FREE, or most lawyers do them for about $150.

and thank you ROB! I think I've found my new bestfriend
