Let's share our CF secrets!

I would love to hear some advice and stories on how and if any of my fellow Cysters and Fibros have increased or maintained their FEV1's. Have any of you beat the odds and gone against the decline by following a certain regimine or exercise program? What have you focused on to do this?

I have recently had a drastic and unexpected increase in my FEV1. It jumped well over my basline and to a point I never thought I would see again. This time around it was a matter of attacking a newly cultured bacteria with a long and intense anibiotic therepy over the past few months. Now that I am feeling pretty great health wise, I want to maintain these awesome numbers as best as I can. The problem is, I am not all that great at exercise or sticking with an exercise routine for any consistent time period. I am very complient with my airway clearance and medications- but there is always room for improvement.

I tend to read a lot of posts on how to treat symptoms-but would like to hear what my friends do to prevent and maintain. I like to hear details- not generalizations. Does anyone feel like sharing any great tips on how they maintain/increase lung function, gain or maintain a great weight, or just sustain a good quality of life? If you exercise, what do you do? If you take herbal supplements, what is it an how much? Let's share our secrets!

I will start. One of my biggest tips on staying healthy is the power of water. I am a strong believer in staying very well hydrated. As much as I hate water...I drink 10-12 glasses a day and I find that the more hydrated I am, the healthier I stay. I also find it helps me keep my mucus thinner during an exacerbation.

I am new to this, relatively. But I have to say that hts, hands down, gets more gunk out of my daughter than any other nebulized treatment when she has a junky cough.

I try to run 2-3 miles 3-7 times per week. I would do 7 if I could but school gets in the way. I start doing this about 4 months ago. I have seen such an improvement in my lungs and over all health, plus I love the "runners high" lol. I use to hate to work out, and go to the gym. Finally I just decided I really need to put some effort in this and started running outside on a path. It works for me, more then the gym. I guess I didnt care about being around a bunch of people any sweating everywhere. When I run outside, its very peachful. So maybe you just need to find what makes you want to do it. I take fish oil, tumeric, and source cf vitamins. My food diet is very strict. Ive been eating a certain way for 3 years now. I did a lot of reasearch on foods and found out how gross it al really is. My diet is very natural....no soda, red meat, pork, mayo, butter, fried foods, candy, dairy products, fast food ect ect. I eat a lot of veggies, chicken, fish, olive oil, raw garlic, orange juice, soy cheese, whole wheat bread, brown rice, furit, tofu, rice milk, avocado. I know this heathy diet wont work for everyone but I personally feel great. There are healthy high in fat foods that cfs can put into their diets instead of high fat processed food such as.....olive oil, avocado, nuts, raw coco ( I buy the 85%coco dark chocolate bars) ect. Hope this helps

Wow! How far/long did you start out running at first? I think diet is something that I need to work on. I do eat a lot of processed foods. I don't think I gain weight any faster eating unhealthy fats vs. healthy ones. I think I just eat this way out of convienience. I will do some research.

What does the Tumeric do for you?

Running and surfing are my two key tricks. The running is obvious--lung clearance! Surfing is like a natural hypertonic saline treatment--it's awesome! Other tricks: eat right, get enough sleep, don't overbook myself, keep strong communication lines open with my team of doctors....and a positive attitude helps loads!
