Low blood sugar and CFRD?

I'm a bit confused, and I am hoping someone can help me out. Sorry, this is probably gonna be long...

I am taking Prandin (the lowest dose) about 15 mins to a 1/2 an hour before I eat, and did it last night with dinner. Had my usual snack of cereal to take the rest of my pills, and went to bed late (1:30am- 2am). Woke up at 3am sweating and thinking "No- my sugar is low?" and got up, yep, felt really low, ate some marshmallows (lol) and checked it right away- 65. Had some chocolate milk (seems to work fastest for me) some more cereal, and a full sugar yogurt (by then I was hungry!) and went back to bed after checking it again at 3:30am- a little over 200 after all that food.

Woke up at 8:20, and bs was 124. Had a bowl of cereal, Splenda'd yogurt, and flavored water, and no Prandin. 2 hrs later, bs was 117.

Had a granola fruit and nut bar before excercising at 10 am, by 11:50 bs was 87.

Had a banana. Went home and ate lunch, again, no Prandin, 2 hrs later, bs 105.

Snacked all afternoon, had dinner (that included rice pilaf and a yeast roll), 2 hrs later, bs is 95...

What is going on? I have had an entire day of hypoglycemia! With no diabetes meds! Huh? Is it good or bad?

Hmmm...that would confuse me too! I'm not familiar with Prandin at all, so I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions there.

The fact that you went to bed so late may be a contributing factor. Since you were awake longer and your body was consuming energy, that may have caused the drop in sugar. Was your day filled with more activity than usual? Is the weather warmer than usual?

Keep an eye on the hypoglycemia, and be sure to include protein and complex carbs, which you seem to be doing already.

Thanks Lauren, I am so confused...but I think I'll take low over high any day- I get to eat candy/sugar then lol (though 3 am was a bit of a bummer...). I just checked it about 2 hrs after my snack, 138 after "Life" cereal with milk, and an 8 oz glass of milk...

I usually go to bed between 12am and 1am, so it wasn't that much later than usual (but felt like it ), and nope, if anything, I have missed swimming all but 3 days out of 6 (2 weeks worth) because of sick babysitters (my mom) and a tornado warning....and the weather has been cooler- it's been lovely here! Thanks for the ideas, though!

The Prandin is supposed to create a "bolus" like your pancreas normally would at a meal, and the low blood sugar is usually not a problem in the mornings (usually still a little high), but in the afternoons I have to make sure I eat a snack, and the nighttime has never been a problem...

I really want to hope that something has broken loose in those ducts, and my pancreas is working well again- that would be an answer to prayer! But the respite is nice, so I'll take what I can get . It's just...weird...

I think I'll have a fruit and nut bar before I go to bed tonight, just in case...

How long have you been taking Prandin? I am guessing that this is a pill for diabetes/ blood sugar control. I have not heard of it - so if it is not a pill please let me know.

I will throw out the only thought that came into my head - so take it for what it is worth. It is possible that if you just recently started taking it that you are just very sensitive to the diabetes med. When I first started taking insulin upon diagnosis (8 years ago) I was extremely sensitive to it. I would get severe lows every time I took the insulin dose they had told me to take. I talked it over with them and ended up having to cut my dose in half.

Also I agree with Lauren. It is very possible that your staying up late contributed to the low. Though I will say it is unusual because most of the time your body releases hormones at around 3-4 am that can cause your sugar to increase or at the very least stay the same. If you have been taking the meds for a decent amount of time and this is the first time it has happened I would say it may be the staying up late. Also to add working out can have lowering effects on your blood sugar for about 24 hours after you workout. I don't know if you exercise regularly BUT if you don't that could be why your sugar has been lower all day.

Oh and too add you have NOT had an entire day of HYPOglycemia. You have had an entire day of normal blood sugars. If it is unusual for you to have normal sugars without the Prandin then I would maybe talk to your doc and see what they think about it. I would not be too bothered by your blood sugars though as they have been in PERFECT range all day - at least the values you listed in your post. That is RIGHT where you want them to be. Yes you were snacking all day and such BUT that may again be because of the working out and burning extra sugar/energy.

Take Care,
Lindsey
