mail order pharmacy question

I just got word today that our insurance provider is no longer going to allow specialty meds be distributed from any pharmacy other than their mail order company. They define specialty meds as meds for those with genetic disorders. I just called and the creon and albuterol can be filled at any pharmacy, but any TOBI or pulmozyme or others that may get ordered up will have to be mail order. Alyssa is not on any of these yet. But I am concerned because when she does culture PA, if they want her on TOBI are we going to have to wait for approval and then the med to be MAILED to us??? Isn't this going to delay treatment significantly?? How do you manage mail order meds?

We've used MedCo for most of Emily's meds since...forever. As long as we call in refills on time, we have no problem at all g etting things. And, actually, they call US to see what we need once a month. It's great, actually, since we would have to get meds at the pharmacy at Children's HOspital which is 30 miles away. The mail order comes right to us (obviously). There is a goofy thing where they call every one in a while to renew her pulmozyme, but they can't say the name of the med, so I have to guess. The first t ime it happened she told me the dosage information and I had to name the med. I guess it was some kind of securit thing to make sure that I was really supposed to get it?!?!?! Anyway, we love having things shipped to us, and, we've never had a problem with a delay.

And, actually, they call US to see what we need once a month. It's great, actually, since we would have to get meds at the pharmacy at Children's HOspital which is 30 miles away. The mail order comes right to us (obviously). There is a goofy thing where they call every one in a while to renew her pulmozyme, but they can't say the name of the med, so I have to guess. The first t ime it happened she told me the dosage information and I had to name the med. I guess it was some kind of securit thing to make sure that I was really supposed to get it?!?!?! Anyway, we love having things shipped to us, and, we've never had a problem with a delay.

In my experience, once you get approval (which can take a day or two, depending on the pharmacy) the meds can be shipped right away. I am sure some pharmacies are faster than others, usually you can pay for overnight shipping. The thing about the really expensive specialtly drugs like tobi, pulmozyme, etc is that most pharmacies won't keep them on hand so they would have to be special ordered anyway.

The first time we ordered TOBI we ordered from Walmart's specialty pharmacy and it took days because the dropped the ball with approval. After that we used Walgreens specialty which was better. Then we started using CF Services Pharmacy and didn't have any trouble getting TOBI right away. That was a few years ago though, haven't had to use it since then.

Then we started using CF Services Pharmacy and didn't have any trouble getting TOBI right away. That was a few years ago though, haven't had to use it since then.

Our insurance company began requiring us to order Andrew's specialty meds through their mail order pharmacy, then went a step further and started requiring all maintenance meds to be ordered that way as well. So, other than his vitamins,which they do not carry, I have to do mail order for all of his scripts.

I have yet to get used to it and Express Scripts is not the most reliable pharmacy. However, I can offer some advice. Always carry your pharmacy numbers with you so if you have to go on a specialty med, you can give the nurse the pharmacy info to call the script in for you. That will cut out a few days of mail time for them to recieve the hardcopy of the script.
